Help Complete the Iconic John Lennon Mural

Donation protected
San Diego, CA - The John Lennon Mural has been a beloved landmark in Pacific Beach since 2006. Sadly, in August of 2023, vandals began to deface the iconic mural continuously until it was completely destroyed beyond repair. This has been heartbreaking for the community as it was a popular destination for residents & tourists to admire & take photos with, for the last 18 years.

Fed up with its deterioration over recent months, local artist Jon Hamrick volunteered over a month of his time & more than $1,000 of his own money to paint a new John Lennon mural. Hamrick’s minimum fee for such a mural would be $7,500 but he painted it pro bono for sentimental reasons. The original John Lennon mural was a major inspiration for Hamrick to become a muralist when he first visited PB. Since then, Hamrick has acquired over a decade of experience working across the West Coast & developing his own photorealistic style using only spray cans.

"I hope this mural will bring a sense of progress in the community, dissuade any future graffiti, and inspire Pacific Beach to continue to display more public art that can be cherished for decades to come” says Hamrick.

Hamricks 14’ tall mural is breath taking & incredibly life like: it’s hard to believe it’s not a photograph until you get up close to it & realize that it’s done solely using spray paint.

Unfortunately, the remaining wall space has again been targeted with graffiti that is encroaching towards the mural. Hamrick believes the only way to repair & prevent any further vandalism would be to extend the mural across the remaining 80’ x 14’ of wall space with Lennon’s most iconic lyrics “Imagine All The People.”

Thus Hamrick has designed lettering with colors reminiscent of Pacific Beach’s sunsets & a celestial background symbolizing universal togetherness to fulfill the John Lennon Mural.

However the necessary $18,500 cost of this is too high for Hamrick to bear alone & so we are asking for your help to raise the funds.

$2,000 - scissor lift rental & PPE,
$1,500 - roller & spray paint & supplies,
$2,000 - anti-graffiti coating,
$3,000 - graffiti abatement,
$10,000 - artist fee for “Imagine” Mural,

This historic mural NEEDED to be repainted & when the community needed it Hamrick helped us all. But, the unfinished look of the blank areas will only invite more graffiti & is unfair to Rick as it degrades the integrity of his masterpiece. Now it is our turn to help Hamrick complete his vision for an awe-inspiring mural.

The original mural was a source of neighborhood pride & its renewal will convey our strength and resilience for decades to come. Graffiti vandalism not only degrades our neighborhoods but also negatively impacts tourism and local businesses.

With everything going on in the world today, it is more important than ever to invest in our community & unite people in harmony.

Together, we can restore this beloved symbol and inspire future generations to cherish public art.

Please donate or share this vital initiative so that the new mural can become an homage to the original & a fitting tribute to the man who asked us all to Imagine a better world.

Thank you for your support!

In the event we raise any additional money past the goal it will go directly to the artist to let them know how much we appreciate them.
