Help a Cosechera rebuild after fighting ICE
Donation protected
Dear Movimiento Cosecha members, allies, supporters, friends, and family,
This is a fundraiser to support the legal defense of a Cosecha Detroit Core Member's husband, who has been detained by CBP. Her husband has been in America for 12 years; he is a father of two young children, a dedicated husband, and a landscaper by trade. The Cosechera is a community leader engaged in crucial work with Cosecha Detroit fighting for drivers licenses and the permanent protection, dignity, and respect of the undocumented community. Now she and her family need the support of the community to get her husband released from ICE detention and to fight his possible deportation.
On January 7th, our Cosechera's husband was pulled over by the Detroit Police while driving home from work. He was then detained for being unable to produce a driver’s license, the officer turned him over to the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). He is now being held in an ICE detention facility in Monroe, awaiting a bond hearing on January 22nd. Fortunately, his family has been able to retain a lawyer and are fighting the case. Bail is expected to be set at $5,000 and his legal fees are expected to total $2,500. The sooner we can raise bail, the sooner he can return to his family and better fight his case.
Every donation, no matter the size, is one step closer to getting the Cosechera's husband released from ICE custody and reunited with his family. Your support at this crucial moment will have a tremendous impact in the lives of her family, as well as the ability of Cosecha Detroit to continue fighting for the protection, dignity, and respect of all immigrants.
This story is unfortunately a common occurrence and the focus of Cosecha’s Manejando Sin Miedo (Drive Without Fear) campaign. Driving is an essential part of life - we drive to work, to school, to the grocery store, to take our children to daycare. Yet in Michigan, undocumented people cannot get driver’s licenses. As a result, driving without a license is the number one reason people end up in ICE custody. To prevent situations the separation of families like this one, Cosecha is pressuring the Michigan state government to enact legislation that makes it possible for anyone of legal driving age to apply for a driver’s license.
