Walter David Mitchell, age 66, a beloved figure of Nelsonville, sadly left our world on August 18, 2024, after a life richly lived in service and kindness. Walter, lovingly referred to as Steve, was a beacon of light and hope in our community, touching lives through his dedication to the Nelsonville Fire Department as well his active membership in the Elks Lodge #543 and the Masonic Lodge. Steve also helped shape the minds of our area youth by volunteering as a coach and referee. He retired from a successful career at Pepsi Cola in 2012 and was a 1976 graduate of Nelsonville High School. Preceded in death by his parents Walter and Charlotte Mitchell, and siblings Dennis Mitchell, Jeff Mitchell, and Marsha (Mitchell) King, and leaving a legacy through his surviving siblings, Michael Mitchell, Jan Mitchell, Rick Mitchell and Doug Mitchell, his loving wife Janet (Groce) Mitchell, his children Tricia Wharton, Christina (James) Perry, Stephanie (David) Barley, Sara (Jarrett) Smith, and Jason Coen whom he cherished as a son, and six grandchildren, Reagan, Paige, Sara, Zoe, O’Rion, and Charlotte. Steve’s memory will be a guiding star for all who knew them. In remembrance, calling hours will take place on Thursday, August 22nd from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm at Cardaras Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Friday, August 23rd at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery. We will honor Steve enduring impact on our community and hearts.”
