Help Cover Jordan's Hospital Bill

Donation protected
On the morning of March 15th, 2021, a petrol bombs were thrown into a group of LGBTQ+ refugees, allies and their children who live in Block 13 in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. This homophobic attack set people on fire as many of the refugees sleep in the open air. Ayesigye Jordan and Atuhwera Chriton received 2nd-degree burns over major areas of their bodies, with Chriton unfortunately succumbing to his injuries and passing away in April.

After much advocacy and pressure on the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), Jordan was eventually transferred to a hospital in Kenya where he could receive the specialized medical attention needed to save his life. However, rather than fulfill their mandate “to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people," the UNHCR is refusing to cover Jordan's hospital bill, relegating this responsibility to the LGBTQ refugees at Kakuma and the broader community of advocates working alongside them.

In light of the UNHCR's abandonment, we call upon you to help us keep Jordan alive by donating to this fund. The money raised will go directly towards his hospital bill as well as his overall survival needs.

The March 15 petrol bomb attack is the latest in a long list of vicious attacks against LGBTQ+ refugees at Kakuma Block 13 (over 40 separate incidents in just a year). LGBTQ+ refugees are unsafe and experience different forms of physical and sexual violence on a daily basis; from beatings and torchings, to slashing and rape. The slow response by the police and other authorities normalizes and perpetuates the violence, vulnerabilities, and indignity experienced by LGBTQ+ refugees.

Since 2014, Kakuma has been uninhabitable for LGBTQ+ refugees who face violence from other refugees and Kenyan police. The UNHCR, charged with protecting refugees, has failed in this regard.  Most of the 135 refugees at Block 13 fled Uganda for Kakuma when the anti-gay bill was introduced, a bill which was eventually passed in part due to the urging of American pastor Scott Lively. They cannot migrate to places like the US given the low refugee ceiling and the difficulties in obtaining asylum.

Jordan's life matters. Please join us in protecting him and ensuring he has all he needs to recover and get well. Donate today.
