Help Jey stay housed in safe community
Donation protected
Hi my name is Jey and I am a recent survivor of a spinal cord injury. I’m a quadriplegic paralyzed from the chest down, and require assistance with most of daily living due to minimal hand function. I am currently at a residence that has been financed by family, and have been receiving care here for a year after being discharged from hospital.
This place has been pivotal to my growth and recovery, as it is very close to my outpatient therapy, is very accessible, and is located in a safe and welcoming environment. However, in less than two months my lease ends and so does the funding. I have spent the last year looking for cheaper and accessible housing but I have had no luck. DC is currently in much of a housing freeze and many authorities do not have any openings for people in my circumstance. I have tried the skilled nursing facility route, but have been unable to be admitted to one.
This leaves me to ask for your assistance to keep me where I am for another year. Staying another year will buy more time to find something permanent and affordable. In comparison to a nursing facility, staying here will be much better for my health as I will be in community, better equipped to assist me and fulfill my daily needs.
Overall, living here will bring me closer to meeting my goals around:
* Securing permanent/subsidized housing
* Continuing intense physical and occupational therapy pivotal to my rehabilitation
* Safeguarding participation in mental health treatment
* Maintaining community engagement and network building
*Learning skills to increase independence in self-care tasks
Any help you can give is very important and appreciated. A lack of funds will be a huge threat to my health, well being and rehabilitation.
I truly appreciate you all for taking the time to read this and considering helping me stay housed in an accessible and positive community.
