Help Critically ill Patients survive in Lebanon
Please help the lives of many critically ill patients who might require special type of dialysis in Lebanon (due to COVID or other causes leading to kidney failure). The expertise exist in Lebanon but the technology is not accessible due to scarce resources. This initiative aims at providing specialized dialysis machines to ICUs in Lebanon.
The last few days of my father's journey on earth have made me realize the dire needs of critically ill patients in Lebanon. During acute illness, the kidneys might stop working and patients would urgently need to clean the blood (dialysis). However, critically ill patients might not be able to tolerate routine dialysis treatment (intermittent hemodialysis). These patients would need a special type of dialysis that cleans the blood slowly over days. This type of dialysis (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, CRRT) saves lives as the patients are given the precious time needed to recover from their acute illness (infection, surgical complications, etc...). The kidney failure sometimes is temporarily and people might recover their function few days/weeks after they get out of the intensive care unit.
If this type of dialysis is not available, families are given the sad news that their loved ones are "too sick to dialyze". As a kidney doctor in a tertiary medical center in the United States, this concept does not exist in our practice.
I am appealing to everyone of you to kindly contribute in any way possible so more patients can return to their loving families and cherish their beautiful smile again. Your donation will undoubtedly save lives, hundreds of lives. Your donation will go towards buying CRRT machines (goal of 10 to be distributed evenly among tertiary centers in Lebanon).
Please share our mission with your friends and family. Your help and generosity will save hundreds of lives.
I , Fouad Chebib, will be overseeing every step of this campaign in coordination with the Lebanese Society of Nephrology to ensure equitable distribution of the dialysis machines to major academic centers in Lebanon.
