Curtis Flowers on 60 Minutes
Curtis spent nearly half of his life – 23 years – on death row, for a crime he did not commit. Curtis is a kind soul, who wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he was the victim of a local justice system in Mississippi that was determined to hold someone responsible for what happened — even if that person happened to be entirely innocent. He was tried six times by the same prosecutor, but conviction after conviction was overturned. Incredibly, he regained his freedom just a few months ago, in September 2020.
How was justice finally served, despite truly daunting odds of success? Through:
· the tireless work of Curtis,
· his ever-supportive family,
· attorneys committed to helping Curtis (often on a pro-bono basis),
· amazing investigative reporting that uncovered fabricated “evidence” and false testimony, and
· the judgment of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Curtis is now a free man. It is a miracle that he has a chance to rebuild his life, but this next chapter will introduce many new challenges for him. Imagine spending decades in prison, without the ability to gain experience in an industry, build skills and form relationships. Today, a small team, including myself, is helping Curtis get a fresh start – the very first step is just to provide for his basic necessities, like food, clothing and shelter. He is 50 years old and we want him to enjoy the same kind of independent, productive and happy life that we’ve all been fortunate enough to have. We’re working on a good plan for him, but he needs a bit of a runway.
