Ahmad loved the little white bird and spent fun times with him. We could not carry the bird with us. We left him at home and I keep telling my children that maybe he escaped when our house was destroyed. Ahmad wants another cat and another bird. My name is Nashwa Rizq-Dahaln. I am a mother of four young children, Mariam (14), Marwan (13), Lana (9) and Ahmad (5). I am a photographer and a women-rights defender. Throughout my married life I live in AlZahra, a beautiful neighborhood south of Gaza City. This is where I had my four children, where they went to school, played and made friends. My husband Islam is a musician and a songwriter. We had big dreams. He bought a studio near our home, stored his equipment and used to practice with his colleagues. Our children watched him and we could already see they are musical too.
On October 7th my husband took us the his parents in Khan Younis as we usually do when there is an escalation. We prefer to stay close to family. Few days after, we heard that out beautiful neighborhood was bombarded… one high building after the other were flattened to the ground. We did not now what to expect. We thought maybe some buildings will escape destruction… maybe we will find some of our belongings.
During the rare five days of ceasefire, I made a huge mistake of taking my children to see our apartment… they were never the same after that. Always terrified and clinging to me. Unlike their nature they picked fights with their cousins… they were heartbroken.
Then the Israeli army ordered us to evacuate to Rafah. We carried even less stuff than the things we carried when we left our house at Azahra.
We lived in Rafah with relatives in a crowded house. Eight families with children, elderly, a pregnant woman who gave birth. It was not until my youngest child Ahmad caught an infectious illness that we need to evaluate to safety and save our children.

My kids deserve to enjoy life and live a life free of fear and anxiety. In order for us to leave Gaza, we need to pay around USD 5k per each family member (USD 30k for the whole family) as exit fees on the Egypt border. Therefore, we appreciate your kind support to help us cover for this cost to enable us to exit to Egypt.
