Daneka Hughes Fundraiser
On the night of May 20th 2020 in the Ponckhockie neighborhood in Kingston NY, my neighbor’s daughter, Daneka Hughes, was alerted by her 12 year old son telling her he smelled burning plastic. Daneka and her four children had just finished watching a movie.
They had only minutes from that moment to escape the house on fire. Luckily they all made it out just in time with only their sleeping clothes on, only to watch the house burn down and everything they owned went with it. Their neighbor, with whom the family was close, lived in the lower apartment and was still inside. Yet and still, her older teenage son ran back around the house to see if he could get her out, but the smoke and the flames were too much and he couldn’t see, he couldn’t breathe and so could not save her.
The family is now paying out of pocket to stay in a hotel to remain safe from COVID19. And they are now looking to rebuild their lives. Daneka, a single mother, is a Certified Nurses Assistant, but is temporarily off of work now on Workman’s Compensation due to injuries she received on her job.
All of these calamities have hit them at once. The family needs everything - 3 months rent for a new place, furniture, clothes, dishes, bedding, all the things they lost. We are creating a fundraiser to help the family along to a decent place to live with beds to sleep in and a table to eat at. We would like to raise at least $15,000.00 to help them get settled as soon as possible.
