Help Defray Medical and Cremation Costs for Charlie Canniff’

Some of you may know, but most do not know of Charlie’s battle with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. Charlie became ill in the summer of 2023, while living in Florida, where he and Janet were retiring. While incurring heavy medical debts (because Medicare doesn't cover everything – as we well know), Charlie did not seem to respond to treatment. After moving back to Delaware in October of 2023, he was correctly diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the Liver. Unfortunately, by then he was in end stage.

He was referred to Einstein Clinic at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia to prepare for a liver transplant. The treatment included a procedure called paracentesis, where they inserted a tube into his side and drained the fluid that accumulates in the abdomen. He was having the procedure every week and they would drain 9-12 litres.

On July 26, 2024, Charlie was admitted to the hospital with a very high ammonia level in his blood. From there here went from the hospital to a rehab facility, back to the hospital, to another rehab, back to the hospital in ICU with sepsis and peritonitis, and it became a vicious cycle.

On November 7, 2023, he was sent from a nursing home back to the ER. The ER doctor recommended Hospice as there was nothing else to be done to help him. He came home that afternoon with Hospice, and they made him as comfortable as possible. On November 12, 2023, Charlie lost his battle with Cirrhosis.

Because he was a veteran, he is to be interred at a Veteran’s Cemetery. The VA will pay for the interment and the space in the Honor Wall, but they do not cover the funeral home expenses nor the cremation.

Janet is now left with the burden of Charlie’s Medical and Cremation costs herself. We are asking for any help you can give her to help defray those bills and to help with her day-to-day expenses. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated. <3
