Meet the love of my life, also known as Deja Vu.

I adopted Deja when she was a squirrely 6 weeks old. She quickly became my heart, and I became her mommy. Deja had a glorious puppy hood, everything from parks, beaches, every toy imaginable, and long cuddle sessions. Everything started to change in November of 2017, when she morphed into an anxiety ridden, terrified, shaking, uneasy dog overnight. I took her to the vet, who prescribed her anti-anxiety and sedation medications. It was touch and go for months. I lost weeks of sleep. My soul was shaken as i watched my baby girl struggle with something i was all too familiar with. We’ve spent the last six months trying a boat load of different remedies- from medication switching, exercise routines, professional trainers, every calming solution imaginable, and all natural solutions. We have finally gotten to the point of partial comfort. She is sleeping, I am sleeping, and we walk atleast 3 miles a day. She takes trazadone to ease her worries, and I have a few other tricks i use to ease her when she has hard days. We have found our own version of peace.
Deja is now 2 and 1/2. Three days ago, our world was turned even more upside-down. Deja was happily running on the beach, when her leg completely gave out, and she hit the ground. She couldn’t get up. I had just enough strength to carry this 63 pound doggy to a friends car, who drove us home while I feared the worst.
Two days later, we had a vet appointment. The vet took X-rays, which confirmed a CCL tear (cranial cruciate ligament- also known as ACL tear). I had two options, (more) medications, restricted exercise, arthritis at a very young age, inevitable injury to her other knee, and contstant pain for her entire life, or a $5,200surgery (TPLO) repair the torn leg, prolong the injury to her “good” leg, prolong the arthritis, less pain, and more playing with ease. The decision wasn’t too difficult. Exercise is an extremely important component in Deja’s mental health. She needs to run, jump, and chase that ball in order to be “okay”.
Today, the vet called me to inform me that the radiology results were back in full. She had even more bad news.
Deja has hip dysphasia, and arthritis in her left knee. This is all in addition to the CCL tear in her right knee. I was defeated with sadness. The vet recommended I have a consultation with a orthopedic surgeon. Dr.Cambridge with Veterinary Surgical Specialist conformed that surgery is needed for her exercise abilities to be back to normal. Deja is in constant pain.
I live alone. My entire family is in upstate New York, as I live in Southern California. Deja is my family. Deja is my companion. Deja is my best friend on the planet.
I am now looking at vet bills, surgeon consultations, X-rays, medications by the dozens, wheel chairs, slings, natural remedies, a change in diet, physical therapy appointments ($150 per appointment) and a variety of other products/devices to bring her comfort.
Anything helps.
Thank you all for reading, from the bottom of our hearts.
With love and licks,
Deja aka “muffin” & Ryley
