Help Dennis find a home and work.
Donation protected
We are asking for help for a 50-year local resident, Dennis Shafer, age 77. Wave Baker, manager of the Sound Spectrum, brought this to my attention last week.
Dennis is a fifty-year resident of Laguna Beach. He has been an accomplished finish carpenter doing work for many homes and businesses in Laguna, as well as building artists’ booths at the Sawdust Festival. You may have seen his old work van around town with “Woodstuff” on the side.
Recently, he has fallen on hard times. Earlier this year, he lost the home he was renting on Brooks Street. The property was sold, and he had 30 days to relocate.
At the same time, he was the victim of a scam in which he lost his savings. Without money and no work coming in at the time, he also lost his workshop space in the canyon, so he is unable to do much of his work. All his tools are now in storage. He also accrued medical bills due to a back injury. He has been sleeping in his van and an occasional hotel room when friends can help out.
Though he has been very emotional lately, he is doing his best to keep it together. Besides money, he would be greatly assisted by an affordable room to rent and a workshop in Laguna Beach.
Please contact us for more information. We believe in him. Wave has already given Dennis $500.00, and I have donated as well to the GoFundMe campaign.
We have set up a GoFundMe account and hope to raise $8,000. to help Dennis get back on his feet. If you could consider a donation of any amount. Wave and I will make sure the money is well spent by Dennis for housing, food, and his personal needs.
Nobody deserves to live in a van, let alone a 77-year-old Lagunan who has lived here for 50 years and contributed his woodworking talents to our community.
