Help Derek Stoll with recovery expenses
Donation protected
We have assembled this GoFundMe to help out our dear friend, colleague, teacher and band mate Derek Stoll who is currently recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This has set Derek back for an unknown period of time with a lengthy recovery process. It would be great if we as a community could support Derek so that he doesn’t need to have additional financial worries about paying his bills (while he is not working for an extended period of time as a self-employed musician and music teacher) and can focus completely on his recovery. Please consider joining us in supporting our friend when he needs it the most.
We asked Derek for a brief summary in his own words as to what has happened.
“Ever heard of Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Few have, and I certainly had not.
After a pleasant drive from Vancouver at the end of August I arrived at our cabin in the East Kootenays at about 5:00 pm. I felt strangely exhausted and could barely make my way into the cabin.
Two days later I found myself in ICU in the Hospital in Cranbrook, paralyzed below the neck and almost completely intubated. This is, evidently, typical of GBS. After a few obscure warning signs it hits hard and fast. I had time to get the word out and cancel all of my upcoming gigs, clinics and teaching.
SInce then I have received excellent care and am in rehab at the Kelowna General Hospital. My mobility is returning and I am learning the difference between 'muscle fatigue' and 'nerve fatigue'. It's a fascinating process but has, of course, taken time. After rehab in Kelowna I have more rehab (including musical rehab!) booked on Vancouver Island.
I am overwhelmed and humbled by the amount of support I have received from friends and peers over this time! I've been blessed by numerous visitors, even though I'm far from my usual haunts! Thanks to you all, the list of names would be very long!”
