Help Derrick Climb The Ladder Again...
Donation protected
Derrick Andrews (45) is a firefighter at Engine 26, Ladder 12 in Newark, New Jersey. He has been with the FDNJ since 2006...15 years. Four years ago he noticed his eyes seemed to bother him and mentioned it to his Mother. She immediately told him to go to the eye doctor. His eye doctor referred him to a optometrist and within 24 hours he was diagnosed by a neurologist as having a large brain tumor and rushed to Beth Israel Hospital for emergency surgery. After months of rehab Derrick, known for his determination recovered and went back to a active life and a job he loved. No wonder it was such a shock to him and his family to find out recently that another brain tumor had developed that would also need to be removed.
This 2nd tumor and recovery has had it's own set of challenges that have even put his life in jeopardy due in part to a stroke Derrick suffered. The stroke has caused paralysis and other complications. Further, his battle with brain cancer is on going at this time.
Derrick is fun loving, giving, and witty. He is a devoted father, son, uncle, and brother. A son of Newark...graduating from Weequahic HS in '93. Last but not least he is a proud first responder who is literally now in the fight of his life.
He would love to be able to continue the community service he has enthusiastically provided to the citizens of Newark. This service includes things like firetruck visits to local Newark schools and checking on senior citizens at the local nursing home. It is said you always know when he is at the fire station because the doors are always open. Derrick misses interacting with the community and his firefighter brothers.
If you know Derrick, you know he is a fighter and is always ready to meet a challenge. He can not and will not meet the challenge of fighting brain cancer alone.. He will need family and friends to support and encourage him thru this long race. Make no mistake it will not be a sprint but a marathon...but he will win!! God goes before every step he will learn to take again.
Please, if you are able to open your heart to assist Derrick with the inevitable unexpected expenses involved with his care he would appreciate it. He will be transitioning to his home and is expected to have a variety of home care needs while he recovers. No donation is too small. Donations of $75 or more will receive a fundraiser t-shirt designed by his family.
Derrick and the entire Andrews Family thank you for your prayers, calls, and all forms of encouragement!!!
Peace & Love....
