Help Disabled Single Mom Secure Housing

Donation protected

Hi. My name is Mila. I’m a single mother of two and I’m disabled. I was in an accident May 31st that drained my savings and made my life a lot more difficult and complicated. I was already juggling my chronic depression (I was diagnosed a little over a year ago) and general chronic pain from several other accidents over the years as well as the physical effects of dealing with anxiety and depression for over 20 years.

I started actively seeking treatment for my mental illnesses a year ago, but I’ve yet to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. It has been very difficult to find someone who takes my insurance and is accepting new patients. And now I’m faced with homelessness which takes away time from dedicating to finding someone to treat me.

A week ago, I had an episode and had a really bad fight with my mother, who I lived with. This has happened before, but not to this extent. And not in front of my children.

I have relatives, but there’s no one I trust with my children. We are in desperate need of a place to stay while I get myself well through physical therapy and psychiatric treatment. There is currently little to no money coming in since I can't work. I am spiraling and it’s only getting worse. I have tried to make the money for a sublet through my graphic design side hustle but I’m failing. Maybe because I’m really not in a space where I can do much work.

The main business I have had to put on hold is my nonprofit organization, Creative Agency for Mothers. It’s a program that I started to bring more access and resources to the arts to marginalized single moms of color in Detroit in order to aid with stress, mental health and general improvement of inner city communities through helping to build stronger families, starting with the mothers who have the least support.

Now, I am depressed, cut off from art and hyper-focused on survival for the sake of my children. I need to get well, mentally and physically so that I can care for my children, get back to running this organization, be of service to others and leave something significance behind for my children.

I need a place that’s safe, clean and livable. And if I am blessed, somewhere I have some peace and support.

So I am reduced to asking for the charity of others. Though it robs me of my dignity, I can’t ignore the urgency of the situation. My children and I need a safe and stable place to live while I get treatment.

If you have the capacity and you feel moved to, please donate.
If you have a residence in metro Detroit that we can stay in or if you can help out financially to help us find a place, you could help keep me alive and safe another day.  I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for listening.
