Help Kylie a Domestic Abuse Survivor

My family and I are helping Kylie, a young woman from Alvin, get back on her feet after being in an abusive marriage. Last July, 2023, her husband beat her up, fracturing her lower jaw in two places. A plastic surgeon in the Emergency Room placed a permanent plate and arch bars (which are screwed into the jaw) on her upper and lower jaw to repair the fracture. Shortly after, she became homeless and lived on the streets for four months before she had the courage and ability to leave her abuser.

She is working on getting her life back on track. She has a minimum-wage job with health insurance. However, her health insurance does not cover this procedure. She and I have tried everything to help her find someone to remove the bars from her jaw, but no one will remove the work done by another doctor. I have made calls and gone with her to appointments and emergency rooms. She has truly exhausted all of her options.

She is stuck with the arch bars on her upper and lower jaw. Her gums are constantly becoming infected, and the inside of her cheeks are cut up. The pain from the bars cause headaches that radiate down her neck. She’s been to the ER twice since the end of December, and they refuse to take the arch bars out. They will only give her antibiotics for the infection. Once the antibiotics run out, the infection returns in a vicious circle.

Her only option is to pay the original plastic surgeon to remove them. He requires payment in full and won’t make an exception. I know what you’re thinking. “Well, there has to be SOMEONE who will remove them. Just go to another doctor and kill them with kindness.” Believe me when I tell you we’ve tried it all. No one will budge.

In July 2023, the cost for removal was $5,000.The doctor’s staff won’t provide an updated estimate without paying $5,000 for an appointment, so we would like to raise $5,500 to account for inflation.

I will be providing the money raised directly to the doctor’s office.
