From Darkness to Light: The Story of Elena Arroyo Garza, Mexican Ophthalmology Resident in Israel

Elena Arroyo's childhood dream was to become an ophthalmologist like her grandfather and great-grandfather. After completing her degree in Medicine at the Monterrey Institute of Technology, Elena is accepted to course her ophthalmology residency at the Barzilai Medical Center in the city of Ashkelon, Israel, just 15km from the border with Gaza.

Elena began her residency in February 2020, ironically at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic. She had to learn to speak, read and write Hebrew in order to communicate with patients and write corresponding medical notes. After a difficult year, she adapted to life in Israel and the years of residence ran in formidable fashion until October 7, 2023 when at 6:30 am, she was awakened by sirens resulting from missile attacks coming from the Gaza area. Coincidentally, it was Elena's turn to be on duty that Saturday, October 7.

Elena narrates:

“I witnessed scenes of great suffering in wounded people of all ages after the actions of the Hamas terrorists, but I also had the opportunity to care for patients and listen to their very moving stories. I received a call from the Mexican Embassy suggesting that I evacuate Israel, but I could not abandon my responsibility, since I was on duty. It was not until a second time that they informed me that that day at night the last two flights of the Mexican Air Force would leave and that afterwards there would be very little possibility of evacuating. Given this situation and my family's concern, I made the decision to return to Mexico.

Once in Monterrey and with a cooler head, I took on the task of understanding what I had to do to complete my residency and receive my corresponding certification. Because the hospital and the Ophthalmology Department at Barzilai Medical Center had received multiple bombings, returning to my place of residence was not an option for the time being.

I was recommended to contact Dr. Arturo Chayet, medical director of CODET Vision Institute in Tijuana, Mexico. After hearing my story, Dr. Chayet contacted the director of the Ophthalmology Service at the Barzilai Medical Center and they agreed on the possibility for me to join immediately and complete my last four months of residency at CODET, where I would do a rotation in cataract surgery.

Because it was an unscheduled rotation, the staff of the Fundación +Luz, also located in Tijuana, and associated to CODET, suggested carrying out an altruistic campaign to operate on cataract patients with limited resources in the community, and in this way, restore vision to these people and at the same time manage to finish my residency.

Once this period is over, I plan to return to Israel to finish the last requirements necessary to become certified as an ophthalmologist by the Barzilai Medical Center and one day return to the society of that wonderful part of the world to give back to them for everything they gave me.”

De la Oscuridad a la Luz: La historia de Elena Arroyo Garza, Mexicana, Residente de Oftalmología en Israel

El sueño desde niña de Elena Arroyo era convertirse en una oftalmóloga al igual que su abuelo y su bisabuelo. Tras cursar la carrera de Medicina en el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Elena es aceptada a realizar la residencia de oftalmología en el Centro Médico Barzilai en la ciudad de Ashkelon, Israel a escasos 15 km de la frontera con Gaza.

Elena inició su residencia en febrero del 2020, irónicamente al inicio de la Pandemia de COVID-19. Tuvo que aprender a hablar, leer y escribir hebreo para poder comunicarse con los pacientes y escribir las notas médicas correspondientes. Después de un difícil año se acopló a la vida en Israel y los años de residencia corrieron en forma formidable hasta el 7 de octubre del 2023 cuando a las 6:30 am, la despertaron las sirenas producto de los ataques de misiles provenientes del área de Gaza. Casualmente le correspondía a Elena estar de guardia ese sábado 7 de octubre.

Elena relata:

“Me tocó presenciar escenas de mucho sufrimiento en heridos de todas las edades tras los actos de los terroristas de Hamas, pero también tuve la oportunidad de atender a pacientes y escuchar sus historias muy conmovedoras. Recibí una llamada por parte de la Embajada de México sugiriéndome evacuar Israel, pero yo no podía abandonar mi responsabilidad, pues me encontraba de guardia. Fue hasta una segunda ocasión en que me informaron que ese día por la noche saldrían los últimos dos vuelos de la Fuerza Aérea Mexicana y que después habría muy poca posibilidad de evacuar. Ante esta situación y preocupación de mi familia fue que tomé la decisión de regresar a México.

Una vez en Monterrey y ya con la cabeza más fría, me di a la tarea de entender que es lo que tenía que hacer para completar mi residencia y recibir mi certificación correspondiente. Debido a que el hospital y el Departamento de Oftalmología en el Centro Médico Barzilai habían recibido múltiples bombardeos, el regresar por el momento a mi lugar de residencia no era una opción.

Me recomendaron contactar al Dr. Arturo Chayet, director médico de CODET Vision Institute en Tijuana, México. Después de escuchar mi historia, el Dr. Chayet contacta al director del Servicio de Oftalmología del Centro Médico Barzilai y acuerdan la posibilidad para que me incorpore de inmediato y curse mis últimos cuatro meses de residencia en CODET, donde realizaré una rotación en cirugía de catarata.

Debido a tratarse de una rotación no programada, el personal de la Fundación +Luz, ubicada también en Tijuana, sugirieron realizar una campaña altruista para operar de catarata pacientes de escasos recursos de la comunidad y de esta manera devolverles la visión a estas personas y al mismo tiempo lograr terminar mi residencia.

Una vez concluido este periodo planeo regresar a Israel para terminar los últimos requisitos necesarios para certificarme como oftalmóloga por el Centro Médico Barzilai y un día volver a la sociedad de esa maravillosa parte del mundo para regresarles de lo mucho que me dieron.”
