Dr. Reem & Dr. Mohamed’s story
Hello, I am Reem Shebab, a doctor from Gaza. This is my husband, Mohamed Harazen, who is also a doctor. Before October 2023 we both worked at Al Nasr Children’s hospital in Gaza.
We married in our home two months before the war. It was a beautiful, bright home filled with love and happiness. Pictures from our wedding adorned its walls. I had many dreams to fulfil within those walls, but our home was destroyed, taking all my dreams with it. Now, I am displaced in Rafah, without a home and nothing left of it.

We are now living in a tent, with the rest of my family. This includes my father, Hakim, who is a 60-year-old pediatrician, and my mother, Basema, also a pediatrician and 57 years old. My older brother, Bassam, is a 29-year-old doctor.
My younger brother, Ghassan, 24-year-old and my sister, Rasha, is a 25-year-old are both medical students. My youngest sister, Rana, is 17 years old. She was supposed to finish high school this year, but her studies were interrupted due to the war, leaving her future uncertain. Also with us are Mohamed’s parents, Fayez 64 years old and Hana 60 years old.

Since October 7th
Since the events of October 7th, 2023, our family has been subjected to intense bombardment, all kinds of suffering, torment and violations.
Like all people in Gaza, we are experiencing a slow death by hunger, thirst, displacement, spread of disease and we are unable to obtain any medical care. We are at a constant fear of death due to the continuous bombing.
Every passing day brings more sorrow and loss. I lost 60 members of my family and friends, and many of them are still missing. Our livelihoods and our reality has been altered forever.

Pregnancy loss
In the days leading up to the war, my husband and I were overjoyed to discover that we were expecting our first child. We spent our days dreaming about our future family and the happiness it would bring to our lives.
However, our joy was short-lived. The relentless and violent bombardments that we were subjected to resulted in the loss of our precious unborn child in the fourth month of my pregnancy.
The loss was devastating, taking a toll on both our physical and emotional health. The anticipation and excitement we once had turned into grief and despair. Now, I find myself heartbroken, without anything left...
Our commitment to healthcare
Despite the personal loss and hardships endured due to the war, my family and I have remained steadfast in our commitment to serve the ones in need, and we have decided to volunteer at the European Gaza hospital. Despite the war's devastating effects, our passion for medicine is our beacon of hope, it keeps us moving forward.
As a doctor, my calling goes beyond just providing medical care and treatment. It's an embodiment of my deep-rooted desire to aid others and create a positive ripple effect in their lives through healthcare, even in the direst of circumstances.
Looking to the future, I'm driven by a steadfast hope to continue enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality, particularly in underserved communities.
My profession is a reflection of my personal values of compassion, integrity, and service to others. It brings me immense satisfaction to make a tangible difference in people's lives, and I am continually inspired by the learning opportunities and challenges that practicing medicine presents.

Our hope to evacuate
After 6 months of this ongoing genocide, we have made the difficult decision to flee and find safety in Egypt. Our biggest hope is that we will one day soon be able to return to our beloved Gaza, to help rebuild it and serve our community.
The process of legally moving to Egypt is costly and time-consuming. To enter the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt, one must register their name on a list. The coordinators demand $5,000 to $8,000 per person for inclusion on this list. Furthermore, they won't add our names until we demonstrate that we have the necessary funds.
Considering our family consists of eight members, this would amount to $45,000, excluding the cost of food, water, and basic necessities. In this challenging time, any donation, no matter how small, would help alleviate our hardship.
We, as a family, will forever be grateful for your kind support during this extremely difficult period. Our objective is to fulfil our basic needs in Gaza and collect enough funds to escape this suffering. We sincerely hope that those who contribute, even a little, will be forever blessed. We express our deepest gratitude and will always remember your kindness.
