Help Shirlee Rebuild Her Life After a Devastating Accident

A passionate doctor, loving mother, and avid hiker, Shirlee experienced a life-altering accident when hiking in Switzerland with her husband. A fall left her with multiple fractures to her spine, including to her C7 vertebrae, leaving her completely paralyzed from the chest down.

About Shirlee

Shirlee has spent over 15 years as a dedicated physician, whose generosity and passion for making a difference in the world has inspired many of us. She is also a devoted mother to two young children, ages 9 and 11 as well as a skilled photographer and outdoor enthusiast. Many of us have gone to her for support and medical advice over the years.

Her accident has left her unable to walk and facing a future filled with challenges most of us can’t imagine. However, Shirlee continues to inspire us with her optimism, courage and unyielding determination as she adjusts to this new reality.

Why We Need Your Help

Shirlee and her family are now navigating the challenges of adjusting to this new way of living and are determined to face them head-on.

However, Shirlee's medical insurance only covers a fraction of the costs associated with her recovery and new life circumstances. Shirlee will need a specialized adapted motorized wheelchair, a modified vehicle, and extensive home renovations, including an elevator, to make their home accessible. They are now expecting costs for the home renovation alone to be over $300,000 and out-of-pocket costs next year to exceed $500,000.

All funds raised will go directly to Shirlee’s needs due to the accident as she works to reclaim her independence to enable her to continue being the incredible mom and doctor she is. Should the family find they do not require all funds raised, any remaining amount will be donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which supports individuals with spinal cord injuries.
