Who is Elmer Daniels?
Elmer Daniels (“Mr. Daniels”) is a humble and kind-hearted man who never lost hope after he was given a life sentence at the age of 18 for a crime he did not commit. Mr. Daniels served 39 years in prison before he was finally exonerated on December 13, 2018.
On May 22, 1980, in Wilmington, Delaware, Mr. Daniels was wrongfully convicted and incarcerated for allegedly raping a 15-year-old female. After his conviction, Mr. Daniels was denied an attorney for his appeal. As a result, Mr. Daniels had to file his own appeals without the assistance of an attorney, and he was forced to prove his innocence by himself.
After many unsuccessful attempts on behalf of Mr. Daniels to have his case overturned, Mr. Daniels finally found someone who believed in his case when he met Attorney Emeka Igwe (“Attorney Igwe”). Upon meeting Mr. Daniels, Attorney Igwe hired an investigator named Terence Jones, and together they were able to conclusively prove that Mr. Daniels was in fact innocent.
Attorney Igwe is the managing Partner of The Igwe Law Firm. Destiny brought together Mr. Daniels and Attorney Igwe.
Mr. Daniels was convicted in May 1980 and Attorney Igwe was born in August 1980. Attorney Igwe believes it was part of his life’s mission to meet Mr. Daniels and to get him justice on his case.
Attorney Igwe worked on Mr. Daniels’ case free of charge for over two years because he believed Mr. Daniels was innocent and aggressively fought to have Mr. Daniels vindicated. On Mr. Daniels’ 57th birthday, due to effort and hard work of Attorney Igwe and his investigator, a judge signed an Order to release Mr. Daniels from prison.
Here's why Elmer Daniels needs you:
The past 39 years has left Mr. Daniels without even basic necessities. In the State of Delaware, there is no law to compensate those who have been wrongfully convicted and incarcerated. The State of Delaware released Mr. Daniels with nothing except a t-shirt and a pair of pants. It is up to all of us as Americans to help right the wrong that was done to Mr. Daniels.
Together, we can help Mr. Daniels get back on his feet and live his best life now despite what he had to endure over the last 39 years. By contributing any dollar amount, no matter how big or small, we can support Mr. Daniels in his mission to become the new voice of criminal justice reform.
Your contribution will go to the following:
- Affordable Housing
- Transportation
- Food
- Provision of medical/dental care.
- Counseling Services
- Education
- Development of workforce skills
- Ongoing legal representation
- Advocacy for criminal justice reform
- Mental and Physical Wellness
"I'm free. I prayed for this day to come - praise God, he never let me die in prison for a crime I did not commit." – Elmer Daniels
