My mother’s medical journey started on January 2022 with unexplainable weight loss. Her doctors had no clear answers for us. My mother started experiencing rapid heartbeats (her heart was racing continuously). On February 5th, 2022 she was admitted to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Grand Bahama. She was diagnosed with severe Hypertension (~200/95). She was stabilized, and her Hypertension was reduced significantly. On February 8th, 2022 she was released from the Rand Memorial Hospital. On February 9th, 2022 the Rand Memorial Hospital called my mother and asked her to return immediately so they could continue the process of flushing her kidneys. As a family, we were not sure why they released her on February 8th 2022, if her Kidney treatment wasn’t completed. My mother returned to the hospital as directed by the doctor. She was released for the second time on February 10th, 2022.
On February 13th, 2022, my mother was rushed to the Rand Memorial Hospital with complaints of severe chest pains. Again, she was stabilized and we were told by her Physician that she suffered a mild heart attack. She was released on February 17th, 2022; however, her health had significantly declined at this point. In an effort to save her life, we collectively decided as a family to get her to the United States of America. On February 18th, 2022, in preparation for the trip to the United States my mother became unresponsive at home. She was rushed and admitted to the hospital for the fourth time. In addition, to the other health ailments, my mother’s blood count was as low as 5.6 (the normal range is 11). She had lost a significant amount of blood and the doctors at the Rand Memorial Hospital was unable to give us a reason. It was later discovered that she had internal bleeding from a thigh injury that we were not made aware of by the doctors in Freeport. Our last hope as a family was to have her airlifted to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to save her life. On February 22, 2022 we chattered an air-ambulance with Reva Air to transport my mother from Freeport to Fort Lauderdale.
We airlifted her to Memorial Regional Hospital at an out-of-pocket cost of $58,900. Once she arrived at Memorial Regional Hospital, we found out that our mother sustained a thigh injury that caused internal bleeding, and at this point she was also facing kidney failure. Her kidneys at that time were functioning at 6%, which is the final stage of Kidney Disease, thus, leaving her to be immediately placed on dialysis.
My mom has no medical insurance to cover the cost of the incurred expenses. Thus far, we have paid the majority of her medical expenses out of pocket. We need your assistance. The cost of the Dialysis treatment is approximately $7,000 to $9,000 per month. Additionally, she needs therapy for her to learn to walk again.
Thank you in advance for any level of contribution to help us on this my mother’s Health Journey.
