Help Raise Money for a Study-Abroad Scholarship

This fundraiser will go towards sending a student seeking resources on a study abroad trip. I have already contributed $350 of my own money towards the cause.

Some context, first. Hi, my name is Huck Charov and I’m a senior at South Portland High School. In April 2023, I went on a trip to Sevilla, Spain, organized by the high school. The opportunity to live in Spain with a host family, to speak Spanish with native speakers, to see new parts of the world, and to experience living in a different culture has inspired me to pursue Spanish and linguistics in college next year.

When the board of education threatened to cancel this year’s trip, I went with my Spanish teachers to a school board meeting to advocate for the continuation of this vital program. One of the board members rightfully pointed out that not all students in the high school community can afford to participate. Some use the money they make at their jobs to support their families. Although the 2025 trip was ultimately canceled, I was still moved to act. With earnings from my summer employment, I have made an initial donation of $350. My initial goal was $3,600, but I have increased it to $23,600 because of a very generous challenge grant from a donor. This means that each donation starting on January 13th will be matched up to $20,000 outside of GoFundMe!

The money we raise will go towards funding the travel needs of an economically disadvantaged student on a study-abroad trip. This could include the cost of food, housing, flight costs, or any other expenses that might arise while traveling abroad. I hope for the only criteria to be that you are seeking resources and have a dedicated interest in learning a secondary language.
