Michelle's Trek to Teach in Nepal
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Michelle Cabrera. I am currently a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison. I grew up with a passion of helping others and my dream is to be able to do humanitarian work in developing countries as a career. My passion for helping others drove me to become the founder and president of the club, Empowerhouse, at my college. In this club, I empower young women through helping them navigate their physical and mental wellbeing. Furthermore, I have gained experience in teaching through being a student teacher in a program called Teaching Young Children and served as a tutor with Tutor 4 Service.
My passion for empowering individuals continues to grow outside of my local community as I have recently been given the volunteer opportunity to become a teacher in the program called “Trek to Teach.” In the program, Trek to Teach, I will be living in a rural mountain village in the Annapurna region of Nepal for over 11 weeks. I will be flying into Kathmandu, Nepal and from there, I will be trekking through the Himalayan mountain range along the Poon Hill route before arriving in the village. In the village, I will be teaching English to the Nepali children (ages thirteen and under) in a local school where many of these children want to be able to learn conversational English, which is important for tourism purposes in the area. Unfortunately, school supplies are limited in the mountain villages and some of the children can’t afford to buy markers, backpacks, pencils, art supplies, and other basic necessities that can improve a student’s education. Trek to Teach also has taken part in many infrastructure projects at their partner schools including building a multi-purpose room at the Kliyu school as well as funding a new fence and roof for the Kimche school.
Donating just $5 would be able to provide a notebook and a pack of markers for a student in need. A portion of the funds raised will help pay for school supplies, fencing, and other resources to promote a safe learning environment for the children I will be teaching in Nepal. The remainder of the funds will go towards covering the program fee and airfare costs. I am looking forward to being able to immerse myself in a diverse culture and utilize my skills to educate and empower children in Nepal. Thank you for your generosity!
