A few weeks ago I was on the phone with my Mom "Tonna Fournet" just catching up as we usually do and she said guess who I saw today? I said who and she said Eric Cavalier. I asked what is he up to and she said well he was on the side of the road so I pulled over and asked him what was he doing and he told my Mom he was hitchhiking to Jackson, LA so he could have his weekly Kidney dialysis. My Mom and Eric know each other because Eric and I were not only classmates but also played varsity football together in the early 90s.
My Mom told him to jump in and she drove him to Jackson from St. Francisville and on the way there my Mom was asking him questions about his situation and he told her he goes 3 times a week to Jackson to the Freseinius Medical Care Center. From there the rest of the conversation was very casual as they were just talking about regular stuff. He told my Mom to tell me hi which of course she did.
Well when Mom told me this I asked her how long has he not had a car, why was he hitchhiking, etc which she did not have the answers for so I reached out to him. Found out he has been doing this kidney dialysis for about 10 yrs, 3 times a week, and basically the whole time he has to catch a ride to Jackson from Solitude. When I asked him how much longer does he have to travel back and forth to Jackson 3 times a week he said until he gets a kidney transplant.
My heart dropped. I Couldn't imagine what it must be like to have to travel to Jackson and back 3 times a week for a kidney dialysis that your life depends on without having a car. After talking with Eric Cavalier I reached out to the best person I know to help with a situation like this another football teammate Edward Freeman and told him we need to try and raise some money somehow to get Eric a car. When I explained Eric's Situation Edward had the same reaction that I did and was shocked he had been having to do this for that long.
The following day my Mom told me that Coach Parkerson is hired from time to time to drive people to the airport and or different locations on a very part time basis so I called Coach and explained Eric's situation and asked him if he could drive Eric to Jackson whenever Eric could not find a ride and that I would pay Coach to drive him until we could possibly raise enough money or someone could donate a used car to Eric.
Well Coach Parkerson was not having any part of allowing me to pay him to drive Eric and said to give Eric his number and anytime he doesn't have a ride that Coach said he would drive him. Since then I know that Mrs. Parkerson has already driven Eric at least once (because Coach Parkerson was sick) for which Eric told me he was very thankful for.
Now here is how we as a community can come together to help one of our own. I am starting a Gofund me to help raise money for a car for Eric. I started this off by personally donating a $1,000 dollars towards this goal. Gofund me takes donations as little as $5 and also allows you to donate anonymously as well. My 13 yr old son after hearing one of my conversations with Eric asked if he could donate $10 so every little donation helps! Again we are looking to either raise money and or maybe there is even someone out there than can even donate a used car to Eric which could be a tax write off for them.
The 2nd way that people can help is even if you can not donate any money you can still help by sharing this FB post/Gofund me page all over your personal FB page, Instagram, and any other group FB pages you belong to.
Edward Freeman is going to share it on some of the WFHS Alumni group FB pages he has started as well.
To know Eric is to know his kind and gentle ways. Even though yrs go by between each time I see him he always greets with me with that big smile as he always gives me a big hug.
Eric says thank you to everyone that can help in any way they possibly can and Geaux Saints!
Please remember to share this all over FB.
