George Uglow Pope, popularly known as G.U. Pope was born on the 24th of April 1820 in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He started studying the Tamil language at the age of 17 and in 1839, he traveled to Tamil Nadu, India. He later became a Tamil Scholar and his most famous works include the English translation of the Thirukkural, Thiruvasagam and Naladiyar among many other Tamil books. In 1881, after serving in India for 42 years, he left India and settled in Oxford, England, where he made a mark as a lecturer in Tamil. Gold Medal of the Royal Asiatic Society was awarded to him in 1906 and he died on 12 February 1908. One of his last requests was to have his tomb decorated with the words 'A Student of Tamil'

தமிழ் அறிஞர் ஜி.யு. போப் அவர்களுக்கு கனடாவின், பிறின்ஸ் எட்வேர்ட் ஐலைன்டில் நினைவுச் சிலை !

தமிழ் அறிஞர் ஜி.யு. போப், 1820 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 24 ஆம் தேதி கனடாவின், பிறின்ஸ் எட்வேர்ட் ஐலைன்ட் மாகாணத்தில் உள்ள பெடெக் நகரில் பிறந்தார். அவர் தனது பதினேழாவது வயதில் தமிழ் மொழியைக் கற்கத் தொடங்கினார். 1839 ஆம் ஆண்டில், அவர் இந்தியாவின் தமிழகத்தை வந்தடைந்தார். அங்கு அவர் மேலும் தமிழ் மொழியைத் தீவிரமாகக் கற்று ஒரு தமிழ் அறிஞர் ஆனார்.

அவரது மிகவும் புகழ் வாய்ந்த ஆக்கங்களில் திருக்குறள் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, திருவாசகம், நாலடியார் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்புகள் அடங்கும். இந்தியாவில் 42 ஆண்டுகள் பணியாற்றிய பின்பு, 1881 ஆம் ஆண்டில், இந்தியாவை விட்டு வெளியேறி இங்கிலாந்து நாட்டின் ஒக்ஸ்போர்ட் நகரில் குடியேறினார். அங்குள்ள ஒக்ஸ்போர்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தமிழ் விரிவுரையாளராக சிறப்புறப் பணியாற்றினார்.

றோயல் ஏசியாற்றிக் சங்கத்தின் தங்கப் பதக்கம் 1906 ஆம் ஆண்டில், அவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. 1908 ஆம் ஆண்டு, பெப்ரவரி 12 இல் அவர் இறந்தார். அவரது இறுதி வேண்டுகோள்களில் ஒன்று, அவரது கல்லறையில் 'ஒரு தமிழ் மாணவர்' என்ற சொற்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதாகும்.

ஜி.யு.போப் அவர்கள், தமிழ் மொழிக்கு ஆற்றிய பங்களிப்புகள் மகத்தானவை.

போப் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள், உள்ளூர் பெடெக் நகர வரலாற்று மையம், பெடெக் மாநகர சபை மற்றும் PEI மாகாண அரசு ஆகியவற்றின் ஆதரவுடன், கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை பத்தடிகள் உயரமான போப் நினைவுச்சின்னத்தைக் கட்டுவதற்கான ஏற்பாடுகளை உறுதியாக மேற்கொண்டுள்ளது.

ஜி.யு.போப் அவர்களின் இருநூறாவது பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியாக போப்பின் பிறந்த இடமான பெடெக், PEI நகரில் அமையவுள்ள போப் நினைவுச் சிலைத் திட்டத்திற்கு தாராளமாக நிதியுதவி அளித்து, கனடாவில் தமிழர் வரலாற்றை மேலும் மேன்மைப்படுத்த உதவுங்கள்.
