Hello, my name is Mahmoud Nabhan. I am a Palestinian teacher and writer from Gaza.
Before the war, we had a simple and happy life, I spent my time working as a teacher of English and educating people about Palestine through my writing. My younger brother, Ahmed, was studying IT at Palestine University, which is now turned to rubble. We lived in harmony and peace along with my other three brothers in our small apartment. The best part was our yard, which is full of olive trees.
However, since October 7th, huge changes have happened to our family. We have been forced to displacement multiple times in the north due to continuous bombing in my neighborhood, which led to losing 10 of our relatives, including my brother, uncle, grandfather, and grandmother, leaving us in shock and disbelief. I miraculously survived death after two artillery shelling hit my house directly
My family is still in the north. After we lost our brother on a very rough day of random artillery shelling's in my neighborhood, which is now nothing but ruins. Our beautiful yard was wiped out, leaving nothing behind. I insisted that our family had to flee to the south, although it was a tough decision, especially for my dad since that's the house of his parents. They urged Ahmed, my younger brother, and I to flee with another relative, and they would come after us. Sadly, my family thought life would get better in a couple of days or weeks.
In the South, losing ourselves and dreams. Taking shelter in a tent at Rafah, we are struggling with scarce resources, our happy life has been replaced by the urgent need for survival in completely inhumane conditions. There is no electricity, no toilets or healthy water. The weather is hellish, the diseases are spreading and the bombardment never stops.
Unfortunately, the situation is getting worse day by day and the military may get to Rafah at any time and we will start a new circle of displacement. Actually, we have reached a point where there is no longer hope for us here and our life and future are vague and uncertain here.
It's been seven months of hell and horror and the suffering continues even after war. Our mental health and life can't endure more. We have already lost more than half a year of unbearable agony. Choosing to leave is a painful decision, but the war has gone too far, and nowhere in Gaza is safe.
The funds raised will help me and my brother to rebuild our lives. It will be used to pay for special permits into Egypt, shelter and accommodation, essential supplies until we navigate to stability, and education support for Ahmed. Any extra money will be used to support the rest of the family in the north.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
