Help Evan White's Battle Against Colon Cancer
Donation protected
Evan's Background:
Evan White was diagnosed with Stage III Colon Cancer in July 2017 at the young age of 24. In January of 2020, he found out the cancer had spread to his lungs. Evan had been through 47 rounds of chemotherapy, 28 sessions of proton therapy on his pelvis, 14 radiation treatments on his lungs, an ileostomy for 5 months, and around 9 surgeries (at a certain point he lost count). In August of 2021, Evan learned that his best option was a clinical trial that MD Anderson was researching. For those of you that follow Evan's story, this is the last update you received. Unfortunately, Evan's story has changed immensely.
Evan started the clinical trial in September of 2021. His fiancé, Katie (my sister), or his parents, John and Dana, would drive him down to MD Anderson every week. He would get chemotherapy one week, labs the following week. On September 22nd, Evan went to Houston for his labs. During a pulmonology procedure, doctors noticed Evan had been running a high fever. He had developed pneumonia and half of his left lung had collapsed. After multiple CT scans and X-rays, the oncologist discovered the cancer was spreading rapidly. More tests and scans were ordered to check his brain, spine, and abdomen. There were multiple tumors of disease in his brain, spine, and behind his eyes causing severely limited vision out of his left eye, a T3 fracture in his spine, and severely limiting his ability to walk. Evan had to stop the clinical trial so they could focus on the tumors in his brain and behind his eyes. He received gamma knife radiation for his brain tumors on October 6th and will have radiation on the eye tumors from October 11th - October 22nd.
Why you should help
Evan is the most selfless person I have ever met. He has raised over $50k for Fight Colorectal Cancer (Fight CRC) to help others battling colon cancer. He's continued to work while going through chemotherapy and has paid all his medical bills. There was a point he didn't qualify for disability (how?!) and managed to push through balancing chemo/work. Most importantly, Evan has shown resilience over the past 4+ years. He maintains a positive attitude and will to keep fighting.
Why we need your help
Evan and Katie live in a townhouse in Austin. The townhouse has multiple flights of stairs that Evan can't maneuver on his own (due to his walker / wheelchair and a partially collapsed lung). They'll need to break their lease and move to a more handicap friendly space.
There are many additional expenses that are needed to accommodate Evan's medical conditions. For example, a bed that he can comfortably sit up in due to his spinal injuries.
Evan gets treated at MD Anderson in Houston. His treatment plans change on the daily and he is often staying at the hospital for long periods of time (most recently was checked in for about 2 weeks). Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he is only allowed one person to stay the night and one visitor. As Katie and his family need to be with him at this time, this results in hotels / Airbnbs for extended periods of time.
His family is limiting their work schedule and taking leave in order to help Evan with his daily functions.
