Help Everest Live Worry-Free for a Year

I met Everest on a Sunday near Rambla Catalunya. He asked for some money, but since I wasn't carrying any, I offered to buy him food instead. He happily agreed and asked me to go to the supermarket with him.

On the way, Everest told me part of his story. He arrived in Barcelona on a boat from Cameroon, a dangerous trip in which five of the other passengers died. He came here hoping for a better life, but without a work permit that depends on complex refugee regulations, local bureaucracy, and might take up to 3 years, his hopes are on hold.

In the store, I watched as he carefully selected his purchases: rice, frozen fish, broth, and spices to cook. Orange juice and shower gel. His choices spoke volumes about his situation—basic necessities chosen with care.

Everest explained his current living situation. He had been homeless but now stays with a friend, paying 120 EUR a month for rent—an amount he struggles to afford. Desperate for work, his earnestness was palpable. A strong and capable man, he expressed his willingness to do any job to earn enough to survive.

He also spoke about the mental toll of his situation. Sometimes he considers returning to Cameroon. His mind, he said, often feels overwhelmed, and when that happens he sits and breathes deeply, letting his thoughts settle.

Everest needs a chance to rebuild his life. He needs work and, crucially, a stable place to live until he can secure a work permit.
