Help Empower Our Newest Neighbors!
Donation protected
East Village Neighbors Who Care (EVNC) is a 10 month old grassroots organization activated in January 2024. We started as a group of neighbors coming together to support newly arrived immigrants standing in long lines at St. Brigid's seeking shelter. Under harsh weather conditions, many had no winter jackets or shoes, few spoke English and all seemed to have abject hunger.
Most of these new neighbors had arrived in NYC seeking a fresh start, some escaping unsafe and impoverished conditions in their homeland. Our work started as a triage -we rushed to collect and distribute weather appropriate clothing and warm meals to hundreds a week in a safe, equitable and respectful manner. Through the generosity of Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir, we created a respite center at the EarthChxrch ! This dedicated space created a network that allowed us to provide greater support for our new neighbors–mostly from West Africa, predominantly men and teenage boys.
Through the beyond generous donation of a community member, we entered into a rental agreement for a new resource center in the heart of the East Village! We moved into the space October 1st and new center includes a kitchen, classroom and cafeteria as well as conference room!
As our relationship with this community of new New Yorkers has grown, we have discovered additional needs to be met and have risen to the occasion, providing information and access to social, medical, employment, and legal services.
Please help us raise money for our nascent volunteer organization as we continue to pay for basic needs including medicine, food and class supplies and so much more. Our resource center work has been described by some new New Yorkers as a life-saving community space and we would like to expand our work as the needs deepen! The more we raise the better we can invest in our community!
** Please note this is a campaign started in January 2024 under a different account and raised $20,924. Due to technical difficulties and while we await fiscal sponsorship, EVNC decided to switch to another GoFundMe account holder to secure funding through the summer 2024 season. Any questions, please contact the organizer. Thank you for your support and generosity!
