Empower Women Who Have Survived Wrongful Conviction

Our Story
Imagine spending nearly two decades in prison for a crime you didn't commit. That's the reality Obie Anthony faced until his exoneration in 2011. Rebuilding his life from scratch, Obie confronted numerous challenges — finding employment, battling PTSD, and mending family bonds. In 2015, he founded Exonerated Nation to help other exonerees navigate the same struggles he faced. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, this non-profit is dedicated to helping wrongfully convicted individuals transition back into society.

Each year, an estimated 10,000 wrongful convictions occur in the U.S. Since 1989, over 3,600 individuals have been exonerated, yet many receive no compensation or support for the lost years. Federal and state programs to help exonerees with housing, healthcare, mental health services, and employment are largely non-existent.

Our Mission
At Exonerated Nation, we believe that those who have endured the severe loss and trauma of wrongful incarceration deserve support tailored to their unique needs. Our mission is to address this as a human rights issue, implemented in two primary areas:
  • Advocacy: We work tirelessly to educate policymakers who, in turn, develop legislation that improves the lives of exonerees and advances criminal justice reform.
  • Mental Health Initiatives: We offer services and activities that promote healing and reintegration for exonerees and their families.

Your Impact
This spring, Exonerated Nation will host it's first leadership summit curated exclusively for freed and exonerated women. This summit aims to guide participants in navigating the unique challenges they face as women survivors of wrongful conviction and equip them with the skills necessary in their healing, empowerment, leadership, and self advocacy.

Your support for this year's summit helps us provide a safe environment and dynamic facilitation for exonerated women to heal and address the profound impact wrongful conviction has had on their lives.

Additionally, your donations will directly contribute to our programs and services dedicated to the wrongfully convicted, empowering them to rebuild their lives and find justice:

  • Annual Retreats: Focusing on healing and leadership for exonerees.
  • Outdoor Activities: Promoting mental and physical well-being.
  • Welcome Home Packages: Providing essentials for those starting anew.
  • Peer Mentorship and Social Services Navigation: Guiding exonerees through their reintegration journey.
  • Innovative Research and Data Collection: Understanding the long-term effects of wrongful conviction to improve intervention strategies.
  • Advocacy Events: Educating the public and policymakers to enhance awareness and inform policy changes.

On behalf of Exonerated Nation and the 3,659 exonerees across the country, we thank you for your support.
