Help Families of Thanksgiving Blaze

On November 24th, 2021 at 8:15pm a 5 alarm fire broke out In 78 Post Avenue and spread over to the adjacent building leaving over 60 families without shelter for the foreseeable future. After being put out hours later, it came to light that the roof had a significant amount of Asbestos which trickled down to all the units as the water was coming down. Also, upon evacuating so quickly no one had the time to reach for any of their belongings.
As someone who was born and raised in this community and who’s mother currently lives in this complex, I know many of these families are working class people who have lost everything they owned, including clothing, furniture, their life savings, etc, either in the fire or through asbestos water damage and also would’ve never in a million years imagined they would’ve became Homeless on Thanksgiving.
On Thanksgiving Day we spent the day and a big part of the night coming together as a community to console my neighbors and everyone involved in the blaze. It was extremely sad to see a lot of my neighbors with only hoodies in this 40 degree weather, a lot of them which have no way of getting most of their belongings back without a little help.
As someone who was born around this area and raised in this building, There’s tenants with families and children who live in this complex as well as elderly people who didn’t even fathom the idea of not having a home for the holidays.
Our goal with this campaign is to help those affected MOST with repurchasing clothing and soon enough some furniture to get back to their normal lives as soon as possible. Again, the fund will be split between families who were affected MOST and to those who don’t have insurance or a separate fund created. The fund will be distributed to tenants evenly to help them get back on heir feet in whichever way possible. Whatever you can find in your hearts to donate to the people of 74-78 Post Avenue will be greatly appreciated and will be put to great use. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

El 24 de noviembre de 2021 a las 8:15 pm se desató un incendio de 5 alarmas en 78 Post Avenue y se extendió al edificio adyacente dejando a más de 60 familias sin refugio en el futuro previsible. Después de ser apagado horas más tarde, salió a la luz que el techo tenía una cantidad significativa de asbesto que goteaba hacia todas las unidades a medida que bajaba el agua. Además, al evacuar tan rápido, nadie tuvo tiempo de alcanzar ninguna de sus pertenencias. Como alguien que nació y se crió en esta comunidad, sé que muchas de estas familias son personas de clase trabajadora que han perdido todo lo que tenían, incluida la ropa, los muebles, los ahorros de toda su vida, etc. Nunca en un millón de años imaginé que se hubieran quedado sin hogar en Acción de Gracias. El Día de Acción de Gracias pasamos el día y gran parte de la noche uniéndonos como comunidad para consolar a mis vecinos y a todos los involucrados en el incendio. Fue muy triste ver a muchos de mis vecinos con solo sudaderas con capucha en este clima de 40 grados, muchos de ellos no tienen forma de recuperar la mayoría de sus pertenencias sin un poco de ayuda. Como alguien que nació en esta zona y se crió en este edificio, hay inquilinos con familias y niños que viven en este complejo, así como personas mayores que ni siquiera imaginaron la idea de no tener una casa para las vacaciones. Nuestro objetivo con esta campaña es ayudar a los MÁS afectados a recomprar ropa y pronto algunos muebles para que vuelvan a sus vidas normales lo antes posible. Nuevamente, el fondo se dividirá entre las familias que se vieron MÁS afectadas y las que no tienen seguro o se creará un fondo separado.
