Help Fasil's Family

Donation protected
Our wonderful history teacher from AAI (Layla House), Fasil Techane, passed away from Covid a few weeks ago in Ethiopia.  This GoFundMe is to help support Fasil’s wife and 4 young children.

Fasil would have been 45 on May 31 (May 23 in the Ethiopian calendar).

He has left behind a beautiful wife and 4 young children, ages 7, 3, 2 ½, and a 5 month old.

Fasil and his wife, Mangude Awlachew, were married for 8 years and were very close.  They were very much in love and felt like their relationship stayed fresh like a young couple’s love.

Fasil worked at the Ethiopian Bible Society as Project Coordinator.  He had just started his PHD in a private college, Gelila Leadership Institute, studying Christian Leadership. His wife worked at home taking care of their 4 children.

They lived in Addis Ababa in a studio apartment they rented from his sister to keep expenses down.  They were planning to move this summer to his parents house which was slightly bigger - a 1 bedroom with a salon and kitchen. They had a happy family life.

Those are the facts.  But Fasil was way more than that.

I spent 4 years in Ethiopia working at an Orphanage where Fasil was the history and religion teacher.  He was the most patient teacher and friend and had a playful personality.  He was the guy you came to to ask questions about Life, about God, about History.  Fasil’s favorite word was “Why”. He would pose intelligent questions to start a good conversation and get you really thinking.  He was open minded and accepting.  Fasil was a friend and mentor and he will be missed by many.

During the years I was at AAI (Layla House) there were over 100 children at the orphanage at any one time.  Fasil left his mark on hundreds of children, and many of those children are now adults.  Because of the love he gave us, we would like to give back to his family, in his absence.  Please donate whatever you can to help Fasil’s wife and 4 children.

I think the best way to know what Fasil was like is to hear from some of those that knew him.

He was the best teacher who teaches from his mind not from a book. I can’t believe he is gone

[...] Our amazing teachers and guidance while we were at Layla House [...] were teachers of 100 kids for different subjects. They were the people who comforted us, treated us like their own children [...], and the ones who taught us about our own [Ethiopian] culture, and America’s culture where most of us ended up.  I will never take them for granted and I am forever grateful for them. If it wasn’t for them I don’t even know where we all would be. I am sure most of you Lalya house kids will agree with this statement.

One of our beloved teachers, Fasil, who taught us about many different religions around the world and who taught us History class, passed away. We love you Fasil, we all are so thankful for you for the amazing footprint you left behind and for helping us be where we are today. Know that you are so loved and we will forever remember your work and dedication and the love you have for us.

I considered Fasil my mentor and close friend while I lived in Addis. He taught me so many things about the area and we had so many deep talks. He also guided me around the city one day and I’ll never forget it. He was very special to me.

Fasil, thank you for your intelligence, open mindedness, and friendliness to a total stranger.

I remember his favorite word was “why?” because he was always so inquisitive and that’s one of the reasons why we connected so well. We were both very curious minded. He even let me speak in one of his religious classes once and let me explain my own spirituality. He was such an inviting person and I will always remember his gracious hospitality which he did not have to do.

I very much thought I might be able to see him one day. That’s ok. I will still see him some day...in the beyond.
