Help Fatimah Study Abroad in Tokyo, Japan

Hello! My name is Fatimah. I am raising money to spend the fall semester (beginning in August 2022) abroad in Tokyo, Japan at Temple University (TUJ) where I will study Studio Art and East Asian Studies.
Those of you who know me know that I am an artist, a writer, and a leader. I come from a family of strong women. I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois in one of the city’s many low income neighborhoods. My mother raised my siblings and me while working long hours every day in order to keep our family afloat; her primary form of assistance came from my maternal grandmother.
I have faced a number of significant challenges in my life. I mention this because I do a good job of appearing cheerful and resilient. Indeed, I persevere despite the obstacles I have faced. From a young age, I have worked to give back to my family, both earning money and providing childcare. I did well in high school and earned a full-tuition scholarship to college. In my first two years of college, I have completed my general education requirements, declared a studio art major, and have begun studying Japanese.
This year, I would like to further my education in a place that would allow me to build my skills as an artist and as a person. Japan is a place where my artistic and linguistic skills can flourish. I have been interested in learning to speak Japanese since I was a very young child. This interest stemmed from my watching Japanese shows with my older siblings and learning to draw in manga styles from them at only six years old. Some of my most sentimental memories include those where I spent time sitting around the television with a borrowed notebook in my hands as I tried to draw different characters from shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z. Oftentimes, I feel as though my passions have been driven by these few fond memories of mine, and I feel like being able to travel to Japan and experience this at the source would only strengthen my passions for art, the Japanese language, and the many aspects of culture within Japan.
Unfortunately, my college scholarship won’t cover all the costs of a semester’s study abroad. Among the expenses I need help with are program tuition, airfare, housing, transportation within Japan, and even obtaining my passport. With this GoFundMe, I am reaching out to you and asking for your assistance.
It means so much to me that you would consider a contribution, investing in my strength and in my development as an artist and global citizen. I would also like to note that I have plans for your generous donations if my time in Japan were to be cancelled due COVID-19. In the event that I am no longer able to travel abroad, your contribution would still be well appreciated. It would contribute to many other things in my life, like getting new art supplies and many other necessities to further my artistic and linguistic abilities. Please help me share my story with others so that my dream of living in Japan can become a reality. Thank you!
