My name is Souleka Mohamed, and in the last couple of weeks of searching for a way I could help the less fortunate in Hargeisa, I got in contact with Yasmine Nuur. She is the founder of Haygabin, a charity organization which aims to put every child with special needs in schools. Through her work, she realized the more pressing issue these families were facing: the lack of sustenance. Therefore, we have the objective to provide 100 families with food packages this Ramadan.
In January 2022, Yasmine began a Food Bank , where in every month she would provide as many families as she can, with a food package containing essential items such as: Rice, Pasta, Oil, Milk Powder, Sugar, Flour, and Tea. Seeing as Yasmine also owns a recruitment agency, she told her clients to add at least one extra item for the poor when they would go grocery shopping. The main challenge Yasmine was met with, was not only the inability to provide for all of these families, but the quantities of items were not proportionate. Consequently, it would occur that there would be too many bags of rice and pasta and not enough milk powder and flour. This was very difficult because instead of having 20 complete packages, there would be 10 complete packages with many extra items remaining. This most definitely contributed to her inability to help as many families as she had hoped.
At the beginning of February 2022, I joined Yasmine as she gave out the food packages. That experience was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time; it was truly incredible seeing those children’s faces light up as they rushed to bring the items back to their hut, but my joy quickly turned into deep sadness as I realized how many families we weren’t able to help. This was the turning point that really inspired me to start a GoFundMe. As I sat and spoke with a few of the mothers, it was very difficult to hear their stories. I couldn’t wrap my head around the strength required to go through what they do and still be so incredibly resilient. Take a minute and imagine yourself in this position: You have at least 6 children, 1 of which has special needs who requires your constant attention and you must provide for them, but you can’t even leave for a few hours to do so. What would you do? These mothers are faced with that question every single day, and so we’re asking you to help these mothers not have to ask themselves that question for the month of Ramadan. I am convinced that if we all come together and give what we can, we will be able to feed all of these families.
We will be sharing updates which will include pictures and videos of the packages we will be purchasing with your help as well as the families and children receiving them, so that you all can see where your donations are going! Stay tuned!!
Thank you in advance, and remember every dollar counts!!

Note: Our initial goal as stated in the video was to be able to provide all 500 families in the State House with food packages. However, due to Ramadan fast approaching, we have reduced our goal to provide 100 families with food packages. As it costs roughly 84$ USD to feed a family of 8, it would cost 11 000$ CAD to meet our goal.
