Help Donate One Million Snacks to Kids in Need

What's my WHY?

My story is proof that a simple snack can make a powerful difference. Years ago, my family was going through the most difficult time of our lives. We struggled financially and needed food assistance. I am so grateful for the support from our community food banks, but I realized how limited the options were for healthy snacks. As my family’s struggled to get back on our feet I created a simple, nutritious snack to boost their immunity and wellbeing. This snack bar helped us during the most challenging time, and now I’m on a mission to help more families suffering from hunger. A healthy snack can open the doorway to a hopeful future, that’s why I’m asking you to join LOLA SNACKS in raising funds to donate one million healthy snack bars to feed children in need. Our mission is to empower kids with the right nutrients so they have the strength to change the world.

In 2011, my family struggled to make enough money to put food on the table.  We were receiving financial assistance and relying on food banks to feed our growing family. My husband worked a commission-only job and was living off of the dollar menu at fast food stores just to make it through the day. I wanted to pack something nutritious and filling in my children’s lunches, and as an afternoon snack to get my kids from school to practice.  I used simple ingredients from my family kitchen- oats, seeds, dried fruit, nuts and cinnamon- and created a simple energy snack.

I never wanted my kids to know the financial struggles we were going through. My husband and I tried everything we could to feed our family, but it was more than we could handle at the time. There were nights I would lie awake at night questioning how we were going to make it through the next day. As a mom, it was all a nightmare. I felt like I was letting my family down because I couldn’t fully provide for them on my own. Fortunately, I didn’t go through it alone. If it wasn’t for the incredible support of the community, our children would have gone to bed hungry. Day after day, neighbors, strangers and friends left groceries and gift cards on our doorstep. Those donations and acts of kindness gave my family hope- something we desperately needed at the time.

As I started packing the snack bars in lunch bags for my children and husband, more and more people reached out to me saying they loved the bars and wanted to buy them. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, that became the official start of LOLA SNACKS. We named the snack bars Lola after our daughter who is allergic to soy- an ingredient in most of the snack bars on the market. It was important for me to keep the bar as simple as possible, using only gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan ingredients packed full of nutrients.

Over time, my small business started to grow. Within two years I was making 6000 snack bars each week out of my small kitchen. As the number of orders rushed in, so did the number of volunteers in my kitchen. Through the many ups and downs, one thing stayed constant: the support from my community. When the orders piled up and deadlines were close, neighbors came knocking on my door, ready to help. The best part of this journey has been the tremendous outpouring of generosity from my community to help feed my family. Now, I want to help feed yours.

Since its founding, I’ve been committed to giving back to anti-hunger organizations. LOLA SNACKS has donated more than 100,000 snack bars to the Westchester Food Bank. Within the past two years, I have donated more than 50,000 snack bars to the Dorothy Day house in Connecticut, a shelter that provides hot meals for the hungry. I’ve given more than 25,000 bars to backpack programs for children in need, hoping the snack will give them the nutrients and health benefits they need to feel their best.

I am grateful LOLA SNACKS has given me the opportunity to support families in need. Now, I’m hoping to extend that reach even further. There are still millions of families who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. I know what it’s like to feel hopeless; but, thanks to the incredible support I received from my community, my family’s life has been changed for the better. Today, I am full of hope. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in raising one million dollars. With this money, I will donate one million LOLA SNACKS to anti-hunger programs for children and give more mothers the chance for employment within my company; ultimately supporting their most important job of all, being a mom. My simple snack bars gave my family hope. Now, with your support, we can give hope to the millions of families who need it most, proving that something small can make a powerful impact.
