Help feed the kids at Losirwa Primary School

Feed hungry children in Tanzania for $0.47 per meal.

Update: We have now raised enough funds to feed all of the children through the end of 2025! Amazing! I have started to raise funds for 2026 and beyond...I am hoping to build a permanent endowment that will allow us to feed the children far into the future. Thank you for your support!

In December 2022, I visited the Losirwa Primary School near the village of Mto wa Mbu in northern Tanzania.

This school, founded in 2008, serves 850 children from surrounding Massai villages. Without it, these children would receive little (if any) education. Although children walk up to 5km each way to school, and although the school meets for 8 hours a day and teaches the 7 essential subjects (including both Swahili and English), it does not provide any food for the children. This was, unsurprisingly, adversely affecting attendance and performance.

Mary, the Head of School (shown in black in the photo below), said that their greatest need - by far - was to feed the children.

In February 2023, I led a group back to Tanzania and back to this school. Our goal was to feed the children by purchasing local ingredients and delivering them to Losiwra. To feed 850 kids one meal, we purchased at markets in Arusha 100 kg maize, 40 kg beans, 100 kgs rice, cooking oil, and salt. We personally delivered the ingredients to the school where they were used to prepare a traditional Massai meal in the kitchen shown below:

Our original budget for one meal (including transportation and labor costs) is $400, or $0.47 per child.

Because of the strong response we received, we've been able to ramp up our operation by pre-purchasing large bulk orders directly from farmers. This lowered our costs substantially.

In response to our efforts, enrollment increased to 1,000, the maximum the school could serve. In response, a second school was opened (named the Lucas Minha Primary School, after our local contact who helps with this effort). Total enrollment now tops 1,300 students between the two schools.

This led us to increase our bulk purchasing and deliver. We have now lowered the cost of a meal to just $0.04! That is the cost of a freshly prepared traditional Maasai hot lunch. We have been able to provide every child lunch every school day since 2023.
