Felicia Kwakye was diagnosed with the debilitating disease, Poliomyelitis at the age of two. She has continually suffered from Post-Polio Syndrome, a disorder of the nerves and muscles that cause new muscle weakness resulting in intense pain in the muscles and joints and mobility impairment. She is in extreme bodily pain and is also suffering from spondylosis where her legs have become bowlegged including both her thighs and right foot twisting extensively.
At the present time, she uses a Zimmer frame to walk, wears a neck collar during the day and at night, wears two knee braces as well as orthosis. Her doctor, Dr. Paul Ofori-Atta of Motek Life-UK, has provided a Diagnosis Report. Below are the pertinent sections:
Working Diagnosis: Dynamic instability of knees, compensatory ankle and foot secondary to long standing effects of right sided poliomyelitis Degenerative disease of the lumbar spine (stress related) and cervical spine. Bilateral shoulder pain probably secondary to weight bearing on crutches
Recommended Treatment
Felicia will require a complex primary bilateral knee replacement at a center with the experience in handling this kind of cases with the effective physiotherapy rehabilitation program.
Costs and rehabilitation
Non-NHS patient undergoing bilateral complex knee replacement will be looking at about £15,000.00 for each knee. She will also need rehabilitation in Stanmore which will be facilitated by some private accommodation in London. It is highly likely that Felicia will require a full time carer some significant part of her post surgery. Her spine symptoms may subside recovery with improved mobility after the knee surgeries but I cannot rule out intervention in that direction. I will recommend an additional £25,000.00 for her spine which could rum up to six months. I therefore recommend that Felicia mobilizes between £45- 55,000.00 for her care in London. For the full Diagnosis Report, please send email to [email redacted]
This GoFundMe is sponsored by her friends and loved ones to support Felicia and also to bring awareness to the many individuals who are plagued by polio and its after effects. Please be generous and kind with your donations so we can improve Felicia's life as soon as possible. Felicia is counting on your heartfelt generosity to help her walk again! May you be blessed!
