Help Our Mother Rita Efua Dada Find Her Lifesaving Diagnosis
Her Story
Rita Efua Dada is a wife, our mom, grandma, sister, aunt and friend. She needs our help to find a life saving diagnosis and get treatment before it is too late.
Rita was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) "a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain"* in 2008. She has been living with the painful condition managed with various medications which make living with TN bearable but which have very serious side effects.
Rita was recently hospitalized on the 6th of March 2019 in Lagos, Nigeria because of the pain from the TN as well as various other issues that had developed. She was unable to walk or even stand unassisted, and had blurred vision in her left eye. She is hypertensive and was fluctuating between high and low blood pressure. While the doctors were trying to treat her they diagnosed her with pneumonia. After a 6 days in the hospital, she suffered a cardiac arrest and was moved to the ICU. They then discovered there was something wrong with her bone marrow. Following many tests including a bone marrow biopsy, the doctors have concluded that she has a malfunction in her bone marrow. That is all these good doctors know and can tell us. She has received 20 bags of platelets and 5 pints of blood. Rita is weak and continues to deteriorate day by day, and we need to get her to a doctor and hospital where she will get the right treatment.
Nigeria does not have the specialists/expertise, equipment or technology to diagnose and then treat Rita. They have used all the resources available in Nigeria, and still we do not know what is going on. The doctors here (and a few abroad) have strongly recommended that she go abroad immediately as they are not equipped to handle her case. We have been advised to fly her out of Nigeria to see a specialist with the expertise and access to diagnose and treat her, and we desperately need your help to raise funds to make this happen as soon as possible. Her doctors here have suggested England or South Africa where they have the right expertise and medical equipment, and importantly, they are the shortest flight time away.
The Costs
Current hospital costs are NGN4,350,000 ($12,000).
Costs for the private hospital, specialist consultations and treatment abroad are currently estimated at £50,000 - £100,000 ($65,000 - $130,000).
We also need money for a medical transport to get her her safely out of Nigeria and to the hospital in either England or South Africa where we have identified doctors/specialists and hospitals that can diagnose and treat her.
