Help Firefighter Tyler Ament Fight Lymphoma
Donation protected
Tyler is a Firefighter and Paramedic for Bristol Kendall Fire Department in Yorkville, Illinois. His wife and high school sweetheart Karla both devote their lives to giving back to their community with Karla working as an Early Learning Academy Teacher at the YMCA in Plano. This couple worked through the entire pandemic without question. On a personal level, Tyler and Karla have both been integral in caring for all of our children, but especially Scottlyn since she was just a 15-month-old with a feeding tube at daycare.
On Saturday, March 11th Tyler went to Urgent Care after his arm had swelled and turned purple while at work. He had ultrasounds, 2 CT scans, and an EKG done. They found a clot in his chest and some abnormalities in his lymph nodes that presented as possible lymphoma. Tyler was put on blood thinners to help break down the clot and sent to the hospital immediately. On Sunday, March 12th Tyler and his wife Karla met with doctors and oncologists who showed them Tyler's CT scans showing a 5cm mass located at the center of his chest. The oncologist believes that the mass had pressed against a vein causing the clot, this was truly a blessing in disguise otherwise they would not have known about the mass until Tyler had started showing more or any symptoms. All of the doctors seemed very confident that the mass in Tyler's chest is Lymphoma, a form of cancer. But because Tyler had shown no symptoms due to the mass they are also confident that means it was caught early.
On Monday, March 13th they performed a biopsy on Tyler to collect some tissue from the mass. They also placed a chest tube in Tyler in the event of any draining and had to collapse his right lung to get a better view of the mass from the way they went in. He had no drainage from the chest tube which was good and they were discharged from the hospital that Tuesday afternoon, after three nights of being there.
On March 21st Tyler and Karla got the confirmation that Tyler does have lymphoma. Samples from the biopsy have been sent to Mayo Clinic Laboratory to determine what type of lymphoma he has. Within the next couple of weeks, they plan to place a port and get Tyler started on Chemotherapy.
Karla has also started an Amazon wishlist for Tyler for items that will be helpful while he is undergoing chemo. We will add the link to that as soon as possible.
In addition to their close-knit family and friends, Tyler and Karla want to thank all of Tyler's brothers and sisters in the fire service for the amount of love and support they have shown us through this difficult time. As well as the support from Karla's YMCA family and our family and friends. Tyler Karla and pup Ivy say "Thank you all and we appreciate you. ❤️"
Both were hesitant to consent to create this GoFundMe, as they are hard workers, and spend their lives giving to others, but this is a time that they need help from their community, and we are going to show up. Funds received will go toward daily expenses incurred when work is missed due to treatments, so Karla can be with her husband when he needs her to be, as well as any medical expenses they may have.
