Help Fix Car AC: Relief from Extreme Heat

For the last four years, the AC in my car has not been working. I had been trying my best to deal with it as long as I could (driving as little as possible in daytime, even carrying a hand fan in my car), but this year the heat is absolutely unbearable. Today the internal temperature in my car reached 110 F as I was stopped in traffic on the way to work, suffering from borderline heat exhaustion.

I've taken it in to be looked at and I've been told it's a busted compressor that will be around $2,000 to fix. They insist the whole system needs to be replaced. No place will do payment plans and I'm desperate for relief.

I've saved a bit of money towards it, but my salary is so low that it's going to take forever to get the full amount. I worry I might have a heat related medical event at this rate.
