Help Flynn Recover from Destroyed Apartment

Donation protected
This fundraiser is to help my college student nephew, Flynn, to recover from a major blow this weekend. He lost the majority of his possessions late Friday night when his landlord called his work place after 11pm. When Flynn got home at midnight he found the fire department and other people in his now wrecked place.

A water line in the apartment above had broken and water collected between the floors. All of the wet plaster and water came down into his studio apartment and obliterated most of his furnishings and electronics.

We are all so grateful he was at work as his restaurant is open late on Friday and Saturday nights. Any other night he would have been in his place and clearly injured.

The damage destroyed his bed, school laptop and desktop computer, couch, TV, entertainment/bookcase unit, his collection of cookbooks, all of his original antique prints, and more.

Flynn is a hard working exemplary person, who is a senior at University of Colorado, Denver, carrying a 4.0 as an Economics major with a minor in Math. He also is a passionate cook and works 30 hours a week as a line cook at a popular restaurant in downtown Denver. While he earns enough to pay for his food, transportation, basic bills, and some of his housing, he does not have savings to pay for replacing every piece of his furnishings and electronics.

His mom works full time and supports Flynn and his brother, who is attending Purdue, with significant portions of their housing, college fees and books, medical bills and other monthly expenses as well as tens of thousands in parent loans for their tuition bills. Her last savings went to tuition for this fall's semester for his older brother. He has one living grandparent who is still working full time to support herself. The resources for replacing all of his core possessions are just not available within the family, though each of us are contributing what we can.

Flynn is a person who cares about his environment and curates his possessions very intentionally. Here is the same apartment last summer and you can see he does not treat his things lightly.

The good news is that after 26 loads of laundry yesterday, Flynn and his mom appear to have saved the majority of his clothing and his curtains. And the destruction didn't take out his kitchen so he retains his dishware, island cart, microwave, chef knives, and so on.

The lease excuses the landlord from any help at all but he has offered Flynn a unit at another building he owns two blocks away. After much discussion and looking at a couple of places unconnected to the landlord...the need for a fast stabilization so Flynn can resume school and work ASAP is the top priority and so they've signed a 10 month lease for this new unit. It is more expensive but the landlord, after much pressure, is forgoing one month's rent.

Flynn can move in this week. However he has nothing to sleep on, sit on, no shelves to place his clothing and kitchenware, nor a laptop or a desktop computer to study/do school work with, and so on. He has one thrift store table they think is mostly usable still (in picture above).

We are seeking to simply replace the core essential destroyed possessions (nothing extra nor are we trying to fund raise for the desktop computer, the destroyed artwork or other non-essential items) and to pay for the last minute airfare for his mother and the hotel room housing him and his mother (who flew on Sunday from CA to Denver to help) until they get him set up again.

Here is most of what is needed and any support you can offer in donation or spreading the word is most appreciated.

  • Macbook Pro laptop (approx $1950 after taxes) (we are not fund raising to replace the desktop computer which was also destroyed; the help for one working computer is of tremendous support)
  • Queen bed (Flynn is 6'5" so a queen size is needed)
  • Couch
  • Bedding: sheets, pillows, duvet
  • Rug (not clear if salvageable; have a professional rug cleaning service lined up to try to save it)
  • TV
  • Bookcase/entertainment center
  • For people who also love food and cooking...Flynn owned about 18 cookbooks as a collection he was building and they were are all destroyed. It would be lovely to replace three of them to get him started again (Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables by Joshua McFadden $23; Appetites: A Cookbook by Anthony Bourdain $25, and Sauces by James Peterson $38)
  • Utility hookup/deposits for new unit
  • Airfare ($800)
  • Hotel downtown Denver ($1200)

We are deeply appreciative of any financial support or spreading the word you are able and willing to do to help Flynn restore his living situation to a functional level again.

Thank you for your time reading this fund raiser!
