HELP FOOD PANTRY IN CRISIS: La Jornada + #SFWDistrict

This Thanksgiving, we, the business leaders behind the Special Flushing Waterfront District will help provide more than 3,000 Thanksgiving turkeys for about 7,000 families in need. We understand that in times of extraordinary crisis, we must do our part to ensure no one goes hungry this holiday season.

La Jornada, one of Queens’ largest food banks, is immensely grateful for this generous support.  But together, La Jornada and the Special Flushing Waterfront District know the fight does not end there.  Due to the COVID19 pandemic, they have recently lost its federal grant from a coronavirus food assistance program. Prior to COVID-19, La Jornada was feeding 1,000 people per week.  Now, with Queens experiencing its highest-ever unemployment rate (one in five out of work), that number has increased to 10,000 per week. According to the Mayor’s office, one in five food pantries in New York have closed since March.  We simply cannot afford to lose another food pantry, particularly in the Queens neighborhoods hit hardest by the pandemic.

The Special Flushing Waterfront District believes in the critical need of job creation and generating tax revenues through smart and responsible development. Though we are working hard to bring those opportunities and economic boosts to our neighborhoods, La Jornada has several immediate needs. These include:

One Trash Compactor - $15k (which can be shared by Bland House and Latimer Gardens)
Two forklifts – $15k each
Two palette lifts – $300 each
Garbage bags – $350 per week
Masks – approx. $1 each
Gloves – approx. $1 each

*All proceeds from this fundraiser are provided directly to La Jordana to support these needs*

We are also seeking volunteers to help distribute the turkeys at the Hall of Science on November 22nd.  Please comment or email contact us here for more information on how to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

La Jornada is a critical part of the community. Please consider donating towards this very important cause.  No donation is too small or too big.  We can’t do it without you. Together as a community, we can save La Jornada and feed the people of Queens.
