Our mother's name is Debbie Walton. Until this summer she spent her entire professional life as a proud nurse and manager at Mt. Carmel Hospital. COVID-19 has impacted so many people in so many different ways and after 46 years of service to others she was let go due to the pandemic's impact on the healthcare system. Needless to say she was devastated to lose a position of which she had invested so much of herself and for which she had such passion.
Being in her mid 60s, she have been worried about her future and the ability to regain employment. Understanding those challenges she had been using her time away from work to fix up our parents home so they could put it on the market if it came to that.
Things became much more complicated last Thursday, October 22nd. While working on a task to improve the interior of our family home she was involved in a horrific accident involving a table saw. She was rushed to Riverside Hospital specifically for their Micro Surgery capabilities as we hoped to save what we could of her left hand.
The wonderful micro surgeon and nursing staff were amazing during the 8 and a half hour surgery to repair her hand. Forgive us the details, but we want to illustrate the severity of the situation she is facing:
They attempted several times to reattach her little and ring fingers. Unfortunately, that was unsuccessful. The surgeon then spent the remaining time fixing the damage to her palm. 4 nerves and 2 tendons needed reconnected in addition to the efforts on her fingers. This was a very labor intensive surgery.
As you can imagine, this is going to come with very large financial cost. Being out of work our mom's insurance is not what it once was and Riverside is also out-of-network but we had to go there to give her the best chance to use that hand again.
My parents have never their lives asked for something like this and asking for it now hurts our family to the core, however, our mom and dad find themselves in a very scary place. We are looking to God, our friends and our community for grace and love during this incredibly difficult time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help and prayers you may be willing to offer. All financial gifts will go directly toward keeping our family home and paying hospital bills. Any excess funds will be donated.
God Bless!
