Help for a refugee family in dire need
Donation protected
We need to raise $25,000 to help a refugee family in dire financial need. This family emigrated legally to the United States last summer to escape the violence and genocide in the Congo (remember Tutsi’s vs Hutu’s?). The father of 7 children, Leon worked hard to learn English when he arrived here, passed his drivers written test, and hired a company to teach him to drive so he could pass the driving test. He saved $10,000 and purchased a car, but didn’t realize he needed to have insurance before he drove off the lot. As he was driving home, he hit the accelerator instead of the brake and ran into 2 other cars, totaling his car and theirs. The authorities have given him until December 4 to pay these debts or lose his license. Once he loses his license, he will not be able to regain it until he pays the dept with interest, which would take years. That will mean that as the sole breadwinner for his family he will be unable to get to work, get groceries, or take his children to doctor’s appointments. He lives in Lawrence KS with very limited bus service, and his children are too young to drive, and his wife had a difficult delivery of their youngest child leaving her unable to drive.
Leon’s attorney is negotiating with the insurance companies to reduce his obligation to $25,000. Please help us raise this amount so that Leon can keep his license and continue to support his family. He and his family are honorable people of integrity and never miss church. We have worked with them as volunteers through Della Lamb for the past year. His oldest son hopes to be a doctor. His situation will be desperate if he doesn’t raise this money. Can you help?
