Anne Protopappas taught French at Spence, a private all-girls school in New York City, for 25 years. She was beloved by generations of students. But last year, after a class conversation about why France banned the hijab, Anne was fired. Unable to find another teaching job, she is suing the school for wrongful termination.
A former student of Anne’s reported her story for The Free Press. In response, there has been an outpouring of sympathy from Spence alumni and parents, as well as Free Press readers across the country.
A group of supporters are organizing this fund to help Anne while she is struggling to make ends meet. The funds will go directly to Anne to help with legal fees and life emergency expenses.
Let’s fight for a once-in-a-generation teacher and the critical skill she taught her students — “independence of mind.” As Anne puts it, “How are we going to have a democracy if we don’t teach that skill?”
