Help for Baby TJ born with CDH
Donation protected
I am fundraising for my niece Megan and her fiance Tyler. In the early morning hours of Thursday, September 23rd, she delivered her first baby. They were under the assumption that the baby was healthy. However, the baby was struggling to breath. He was placed on her chest to see if that would help to stimulate him but it didn't work. She barely got to hold him before he was taken away to the nursery. Sometime later the nurse delivers news that no parent wants to hear. The baby was not doing good. The baby was born with CDH, a hole in his diaphragm which allowed his abdominal organs to push up into his chest and prevent one of his lungs from developing fully. The hospital where he was born was not equipped for cases like this and they had to reach out UNC. UNC had to send a special team to pick up and transport the baby to Chapel Hill. So now sits a new, young mother, not being allowed to hold her baby, never heard him cry or look at his eyes having her baby taken to another hospital without her. She had the hospital discharge her so that she could travel to UNC to be with the baby where they found out more bad news. Due to the lack of equipment and proper care, the baby was in distress which placed an impact on his little heart and liver. He was taken to surgery at UNC and placed on ECMO to circulate and oxygenate his blood. They have also learned that his blood is not clotting. He will be scheduled for another surgery soon to push his abdominal organs back into place and repair the diaphragm. His stomach will be left open to manage care and treatment. His oxygen levels were only at 50% and at this time they are not sure if this has affected his brain or not. We are unsure at this time what his chances of survival are but we do know that it will be a long road to recovery.
My niece and her fiance were able to get a room about 4 miles from the hospital but can only afford to stay until Monday. The hospital has talked to them about the Ronald McDonald House nearby. However, when her fiance returns to work, he will not be able to stay if he is traveling back and forth to work, due to Covid restrictions and will only be allowed to stay there on weekends. So in order for him to be there for her and the baby, he will have to commute back and forth to UNC each day after work. Between paying for parking and food at the hospital and trying to maintain their normal household bills while going through this, money will be tight. If anyone can help them in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. And may you be blessed for your contribution.
