We had a busy day preschool in the morning, then a Dr appt for my back and shopping at Hannaford. Home and visit daddy who was home sick. Downstairs to make a cup of tea then sit down and nurse her to sleep with Mickey Mouse on the TV. But she was right there beside me. I poured the hot water in the cup took my eyes off of it to see the notch where to rip the tea bag pouch open and then looked at the now missing cup. Screams. I whipped her pants and boots off in one fell swoop, scooped her up under her legs and plopped her in the sink cold water running, burning my hands as I peeled her shirt off. Got Jeff and we headed out to the ER. Our unorthodox way of getting her to the hospital saved her hours of delay. I do not recommend any one repeat this but we drove her to Wiscasset, when we noticed her going into shock and pulled into their ambulance bay. They took us toward Brunswick which diverted us to Barbara Bush Portland. The ER room was packed. That day in the ER they were worried about her survival. We had teams of surgeons, plastic surgeons, wound specialists, burn specialists and tons of support people all around us. We lucked out to have Dr. Neilson as her surgeon.
The burns were made worse by the polyester turtle neck she had on, the ruffled seam caused a zig zag 3rd degree burn from shoulder to shoulder, but luckily my quick thinking saved her legs from getting burned. Still she had burns to her face, neck, both shoulders, back, chest and abdomen. 15% body burn.
