Here’s their story:
On July 18 at 8:00pm our senior dog Cheerio had an accident, he jumped from our stairs and didn’t land as he always did. He fell, started screaming in pain and couldn’t move. He was immediately taken to a 24 hour emergency vet clinic where X-rays were taken and no fracture was found but he couldn’t move, we were sent home with some pain killers and told to call a specialist if he wasn’t moving in 3 days. We spent the night with him watching how he couldn’t move his back legs so next day in the morning we called a specialist, when the specialist checked in with the 24 hour vet, they informed him that Cheerio wasn’t feeling his legs the noght before, so he called us and said we should bring him for an emergency check up the next day and that way he would make sure to do what was best for Cheerio.
On July 20th Cheerio was taken to the specialist Dr. Mongil who was recommended by many friends, the doctor found that Cheerio had 2 herniated discs and needed to go into a surgery procedure that very same day or else his chances of walking again would continue to get slimmer. We had to do it. After the surgery the Dr called us and told us that everything seems to have gone well, 1 of the disc left and small indentation in the spinal cord but that shouldn’t be an issue, he also gave us the great news that Cheerio was in fact feeling his back legs and responding, so chances of Cheerio walking again are very high. He told us that this is a very tedious recovery and that we should see him in about 3 weeks once he heals from the surgery to start the therapy process with hopes to help him walk again. So after the initial 24 hour emergency visit and the surgery, our vet bills came up to $5,109.53 our credit cards have been maxed up and we still have to give him therapy to help him recover after the surgery. Thats without counting the pee pads and other accessories we’ve bought to help us trough the process. Being Honest, We need help.
A little about Cheerio
Cheerio was our first rescue out of the 9 pets we have in total (8 cats and 1 dog) Cheerio was rescued on September 2 of 2014 from a parking lot of the Mall we used to work in, after a few days seeing him in distress Des decided to take him home and try to find his owner. A few weeks after that and with no sight of his old owners, we fell in love with Cheerio and his personality so we decided to give him a forever home. Cheerio has been with us for almost 9 years and when we rescued him the vet told us he had aprox. 1 year and a half to 2 years, so with that in mind Cheerio is 10 to 11 years old. He was the reason why we rescued our second pet and little did we know they where the begining of our TNR cat program “Cats of Necromancy”.
Cheerio has always been a energetic and loving soul, he loved to run and jump in the dirt, he loves to go to work with us since he is very needy and is always looking for love our store is the perfect get away to get all the attention he wants. When he stayed home he spent his days cuddling with 4 of our cats and waiting for us to get home so he could go downstairs and play in the dirt. He was always smiling and wagging his tail and he followed us everywhere we go. Aside from the accident Cheerio is a very healthy dog and we are positive he still has so much live in him and we just want to make sure he lives his life to the fullest. I’ts been soul crushing seeing him in this state, not able to move and follow us everywhere, you can still see the confusion in his eyes whenever he tries to move and he can’t. A week after the surgery he started to low key move his tail a bit, he is pooping healthy and peeing on his own and those are all great signs of recovery but we still have a long road ahead.
