80% of Dessie Referral Hospital is Destroyed and Needs Your Help

Dessie Referral Hospital is one of the largest specialized hospitals in Ethiopia, serving 10 million patients annually, that has been devastated by the civil war in Ethiopia. Unfortunately, 80% of the hospital system has been destroyed or looted by an insurgent group, Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), leaving millions of residents without access to essential medical care services.

This hospital is located in Dessie, a town in the South Wollo Zone of the Amhara region. Millions of residents within the Amhara, Afar, and Tigray region rely on this hospital for preventative, diagnostic, and surgical treatments. Every aspect of the hospital has been demolished from surgical units to pharmacy storage that contained life-saving medications causing close to 8 million people to lose access to medical care.

The hospital's healthcare professionals are forced to turn away thousands of patients due to the lack of necessary medical equipment. For example, since the destruction of the Hospital, the Maternity Unit, which used to give delivery service to 800 births and 200 cesarean births per month, is now struggling with overwhelming numbers of expecting mothers and newborns that require intensive medical care. Without essential medical equipment, supplies, and medications, mothers are dying during childbirth, giving stillbirth, and newborns are receiving inadequate postpartum care.
