Help for KCMO police officer shot during traffic stop
Donation protected
My nephew, Reed Nelson, is a KCMO police officer. The evening of April 8, 2024, he was called to assist in an arrest of an individual who was driving under the influence of drugs. While the officers were working to get the suspect in custody, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Reed near the elbow of his dominant arm. The bullet shattered his elbow and other bones in his arm. After an extensive surgery where physicians reconstructed his broken bones to the extent possible, he now faces a long recovery period. Doctors are hopeful that within a year he will gain 80% of his mobility and strength in that arm. 100% recovery is not expected.
Reed is a single father of three young boys. The injury will affect his ability to do simple things with his boys such as play baseball, ride bicycles or even give them horseback rides. But more crucially, this injury will significantly impact the family financially. Although Reed will be able to receive his pay from the police department, a substantial amount of his income was obtained through his off-duty work assignments. Because he will not have use of his arm for months, he is unable to work any of the off duty jobs for at least 9 months. The loss of that income is devastating to his family.
This fundraiser is set up to provide Reed some relief from the stress and worry of not being able to support his young family financially so he can focus on his recovery and his boys can be alleviated from further stress after this terrible incident. All donations will be sent securely to Reed to help his family with bills, food and other essentials to make sure that the children do not suffer further from this senseless act of violence. Any amount is appreciated. Thank you for any help you can provide.
